Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

If you're an Elvis fan, you probably already have all the songs on the new VIVA LAS VEGAS CD released on the 30th anniversary of his death. I do. (The opening track is the studio version of "Viva Las Vegas" recorded for the film, which is kind of funny when you think about it: did Elvis ever sing that song live in Las Vegas?).

What made me buy the Deluxe 2CD edition was that it included a complete and previously unreleased Vegas show. At one point, Elvis even introduces and wishes a happy birthday to the wife of his former boss from Memphis in the audience (the boss Elvis had when he drove truck for an electric company).

The 3-CD special edition of THAT'S THE WAY IT IS also has a complete (and different) Vegas show on one of its discs, so if you're into hearing entire shows, you can check that one out also.

This is the best multi-disc set of Elvis Presley live performances that I know of, and you really need to get this 2-CD version of it rather than the 1-CD version of the same name. The other reviewers here have done a good job in describing it, but I'll take a crack at it as well. This 2-CD set spans the years 1969 through 1972, when Elvis was still dynamic and in great spirits. The first CD is a compilation put together by RCA, and is quite a good representation of many of Elvis's best live songs from various Las Vegas concerts 1969-72. This is what is on the 1-CD version of "Elvis: Viva Las Vegas." I was especially glad to get ahold of "The Impossible Dream" from February 1972, since it's a better performance than the one on "Elvis as Recorded at Madison Square Garden" 4 months later. Several songs (6?) on disc 1 were taken from another great CD of Elvis in Vegas entitled "Elvis: On Stage."

The second disc is a great complete Las Vegas concert from August 21, 1969 that was previously unreleased, and Elvis was really fired up that night. All the songs on it go well, although it occasionally sounds like he's distracted by his interaction with the audience, especially on "Love Me Tender." This is the only place I've heard Elvis sing "Memories" in concert, and he originally sang it on his NBC-TV special in 1968. "Baby What You Want Me To Do" is another one he sang on that TV special, but I've heard him do it in concert a few other places too. Also, this is the best I've heard Elvis sing "In the Ghetto" in concert. A similar CD to this second disc is "Elvis

As a buyer, you should be aware that there are lots of versions of this release to choose from. First there is the European 2-CD version that has nineteen tracks on the first CD and the complete August 21st midnight show on the second disk. The U.S. version is a single CD that does not include the August 21st show. A third variation is a Wal-Mart edition of the European 2-CD set. Both the single CD and the Wal-Mart 2-CD albums are missing the following three songs on disk number one: "Proud Mary" from February 16th 1970, "I've Lost You" from August 11th 1970 and "It's Over" from February 17th 1972. If you are looking for a Las Vegas "sampler", any of these three variations may be a good choice. If you already have the albums "On Stage", "That's The Way It Is", "Platinum", "Live In Las Vegas-box set" and "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" (the 70's box set) then you have all the live performances on CD-1. The first track is from the 1963 film "Viva Las Vegas" and is a studio recording. You can also purchase all nineteen songs from disk number one in the MP-3 format.

The August 21st show was the very first performance that RCA recorded and the audio mix is less than the best at times. Because it is a midnight show, some of the language and humor is a little more adult in nature.

All things considered, the European 2-CD set is the best deal since the Wal-Mart version and the single CD are often sold for about the same price. As serious Elvis fans know, you end up with a whole lot a duplication to get something that hasn't been available. Currently, the 2-CD version is the only source for the August 21st show.
