Editorial Reviews

Ek Vivaah... Aisa Bhi is an incredible tale of Chandni, who belongs to a middle-class family and Prem, who belongs to an upper-middle class family. Chandni has a mesmerizing voice and Prem too is an unconventional Ghazal singer. They meet to practice ghazals for the upcoming ghazal competition and soon fall in love. Unfortunately, on the day of their wedding, Chandni's father passes away leaving her younger brother and sister behind. Initially Chandni decides to leave the house and her siblings under the care of her uncle. However, when she realizes that her immoral uncle only desires to capture the house and is least bothered about her siblings, she decides to accept their responsibility whole-heartedly and chooses to bring them up herself. She keeps stone on her heart and takes a bitter decision that she will not marry until her siblings stand on their feet. Prem promises to wait for her and keeps assisting her in all her troubles. Will Chandni and Prem get married after fulfilling all their responsibilities? Have you ever come across such an eternal and unconditional love story?

Typical Bollywood feel good movie.

It's not too surprising given that practically the same team made both films.

This movie was charming, and Sonu Sood was perfect in this gentle role (one of the best roles I've seen him play). It is your typical Bollywood romance, with one twist -- the 'courting' part of the romance takes place over many years, trials, and tragedies. A perfect film illustrating how above all things, love is patient.

While Vivah is just about as perfect as a Bollywood film that glorifies pure unselfish love can get, I can't call this attempt at extoling the same values nearly as successful. It isn't the story, because while some parts of it will not make sense to an average western viewer, it is a truly moving tale. The flaws all lie in execution and a poor casting choice.

First of all, if you've seen Vivah you recognize most of the music, oh it's not all direct copying, but it's the same style with similar melodies and lyrics. But most damaging is that there's one song after another, after another, and they just repeat information. Now I adore Hindi love songs, but even I kept thinking to myself, 'Chee another one!' When there's a cast of good actors to work with, why rely 90% on the songs and playback singers to do the heavy lifting. All the songs were lovely, but most were completely unnecessary! Twelve songs in two hours is pushing it, even in Bollywood. Why even close to four hour epics such as Lagaan - Once upon a Time in India - 2-Disc Collector's Edition - All Regions DVD - PAL - Aamir Khan - Bollywood and Jodhaa Akbar (Three-Disc Collector's Edition) don't need so many.

With that strike against it, the film also falters on its visual appeal. Again it looks almost identical to it's semi-namesake. It's not too surprising given that practically the same team made both films.

I was a bit taken aback when I noticed that this takes place in Bhopal, the site of the worst industrial poisoning of a population in history. Once I adjusted to that very unpleasant memory, I was able to get into the story. It's the typical boy-meets-girl, boy-wants-to-marry-girl scenario, but because of a family tragedy, that doesn't happen for a number of years because Chandni, the musically talented but duty-bound older sister in love with Prem the singing idol, feels obligated to raise her siblings and provide for them. There's a minimalist plot with two good-looking stars and tons of singing, dancing, rainbow colors, Hindu propriety, meaningful looks between the lovers but not much else, and a long-delayed happy ending. Typical Bollywood. If you like Bollywood films, you'll like this.

To lovey-dovey. That's fine, just not my cup of tea. I'm not into action movies. I mean, there has to be some conflict in the movie.

Although songs in this movie are kind of drag, but the story line is excellent.
Good movie considering the latest breed of hindi movie being churned by
Bollywood.
