5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Vivaldi May 23, 2007
This CD is a favorite for quiet times, whether reading or just looking at the sky and contemplating; The 6 Opus 10 concertos are filled with beauty, and have movements, like the Largo from Concerto # 2, "La Notte," that are extraordinary, especially in this fluid, exquisite performance by Aurele Nicolet and the legendary I Musici. Nicolet, who was born in Switzerland in 1926, is a master virtuoso who was First Flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Furtwangler in the 50's, as well as having an international concert career. I Musici have been performing and recording since 1952, and are for my money, the preeminent interpreters of Vivaldi, and together I Musici and Nicolet create musical magic.

The booklet insert notes state that the transverse flute was somewhat of a "novelty instrument" in the Venice of Vivaldi's day, and he introduced it to the city in 1727 in the opera "Orlando." These Opus 10 concertos were published in 1728 in Amsterdam, where the instrument was already popular, and Vivaldi a well known composer. This recording was made in 1986 in the Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. The restoration is excellent, and the sound crisp and clear even on my little boombox. Total playing time is 50:16
