This collection of Vivaldi Concertos is an excellent purchase for someone who loves "The Four Seasons" and wants to buy a second Vivaldi CD. Conductor Neville Marriner (not Norman Nelson as is indicated above) and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields turn in first rate performances of these compositions. More serious collectors will be a bit annoyed at this title though for a couple of reasons. First, two of the very same performances of the Concertos featured on this disc appear on other Double Decker CDs of the complete "L'Estro Amonico" and "La Stravaganza." Second, the other four offerings are from a variety of sessions, so why doesn't London/Decca reissue more of this material as Double Decker CDs instead of giving us bits and pieces on this compilation. Reuniting the original sessions would be an altogether more welcome release than this title, which while well played, suffers from an overall lack of cohesion.

Format: Audio CD
This Vivaldi disc by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields is a compilation of assorted individual recordings dating from the 1960s and 1970s -- before the hyphens were dropped, which is why I include them here. It's a reasonably good if sometimes uninspiring Vivaldi program that is well played on modern instruments. I have to say, though, that I prefer another release that shares three of these same performances. Titled Weekend Vivaldi, that other disc boasts the Piccolo Concerto, plus the Op. 4 No. 8 Violin Concerto and the Two Violin Concerto Op. 9 No. 9. To my ears, that other program takes the best of what's on the disc under review and adds pieces that make the whole experience just a bit more fun. Vivaldi Weekend is now out-of-print and may be hard to find, but I believe it is downloadable from Amazon as I write this. I will admit that these days I much prefer my Baroque orchestral works to come in period instrument form, but as I said at the start, these are certainly fine vintage renditions from people who know their material. As a Vivaldi grab bag, it's okay.

The baroque flair is there in abundance with Vivaldi and this is a great gang of highly-listenable favorites.
