Editorial Reviews

Robert King leads his King's Consort on this reissue of colorful and imaginative concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. The term con molti istromenti (Vivaldi's own) refers not so much to the literal number of instruments involved as to their variety and unusual deployment. For an Italian concerto of the period to use wind instruments at all would be unusual; Vivaldi combines recorders, oboes, chalumeaux, horns and bassoons alongside a wide-ranging complement of strings, itself including viole all'inglese and the even more obscure violins 'in tromba marina.' The composer's opportunity to write such works arose largely from the talented pool of girls available at the Pieta orphanage in Venice. These expert musicians would turn their hands to whatever Vivaldi could possibly desire and the resultant scoring is colorful (sometimes outrageously so) and inexhaustibly inventive.

Fascinating reproduction using period instruments which not in use anymore which were even very extravagant for Italy at the time. Vivaldi scored these for elite musician groups for church festivals and special concert events.
King's Consort led by Robert King provide spirited and passionate renderings of these colorful baroque pieces. Layers of independent playing instruments or semi-independent result in a warmth and richness quality which will be very pleasing to all baroque lovers.

Although this music does not approach the depth and profundity of Handel and Bach, these showpieces offer exotic scoring and vigorous playing that more than make up this. The King's Consort is aggressive without being grating, and plays with warm-blooded enthusiasm that is worthy of the hot-tempered Venetian composer.
Highly recommended for all lovers of Baroque music.

This disc, well recorded in 1998, still sounds very well and brings together seven concertos featuring a range of soloists instead of the usual one or two per concerto. This 'molti istromenti' approach to concerto writing was very rare during Vivaldi's day particularly in Italy. Vivaldi was therefore especially unusual insofar as he wrote over 30 of these works. One of the reasons may well be resultant from the need for him to continue writing for the outstanding and varied talents of the girls of the famous 'Ospedale della Pieta' home for foundlings. These girls were renowned, not only for their individual expertise but also for the range of instruments upon which they could demonstrate their expertise.

Whatever the reasons for this departure from the norm when it came to writing concertos, the gain is now very much ours in this modern day. These seven works presented here are all highly entertaining and are played with skill and relish by all the musicians concerned. The performances are all played on period style instruments and reflect the tremendous strides that have occurred when it comes to mastering such instruments. No reservations need to be made on any score as regards performance standards.

There has been a mixed reaction to this disc which I personally find as something of a puzzle. One reviewer even gives a link (on the UK site) to an alternative disc (of the opus 10 concertos) as an example of superior standards. As an owner of that alternative disc I can only comment that I find both to be equally enjoyable in there very different ways - they are very different concertos after all.

I would suggest that this disc makes for a refreshing and enlivening alternative collection of concertos featuring several unlikely combinations of instruments. It is a further example of Vivaldi's talent for inventive composition and is in no way let down by either recording or any of the performances on this disc.

According to the old saw, Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 1,000 times. The contents of this CD nourish that misconception. This is a collection devoid of inventiveness and adventure. Be prepared for repetitions, semi-repetitions and the most leaden handling of themes, with the composer showing a curious preference for up-and-down surges instead of giving priority to moving the score forward. Lots of heavy handed dross emerges from the sluggish composing. To be sure, there's busy-busy in the score, but it's of a character we would attribute today to someone suffering from jet fatigue. In the times he lived in, he might have composed these to meet some calendar deadline, with one eye on the writing table and the other on the hour glass. These are not the Vivaldi pieces of composing distinction that have set benchmark standards for exuberance and vivacity. This lot relies on stuck-in-the-groove emphases, strong rhythm and phasing instruments in and out. And the different voices and timbres of the various instruments are treated in the most utilitarian fashion, giving us nothing to savour --- a waste of sound colour possibilities. The two 5* reviews give praise from the point of view of Baroque scholars and specialists. Generalists who love baroque music and seek the magic, lilt and bouyancy of Vivaldi will be disappointed in these.

Give this collection a wide berth. There are quality alternatives aplenty. A perfect example is the new release of Vivaldi on "Venetian Dreams" with Matthais Maute, available from Amazon. One might also explore the violin concerti series on Naxos, definitely in the safe zone regarding composing quality and listener satisfaction, and at an attractive price.
