5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous recording and interpretation of Vivaldi, June 16, 2011
This review is from: Vivaldi: 6 Double Concertos for Flute, Violin, Strings, and Harpsicord (Audio CD)
One of the BEST recordings of Vivaldi's music ever made. What a horrible tragedy that this is out of print. Almost every concerto is stunning on this set. Rampal and Stern make wonderful soloists and blend well together.

I do not particularly care for the interpretation of the first D-Major concerto because the tempo is a little bit too fast and makes the concerto "choppy" sounding, but even in that one, the soloists are superb.

Particularly stunning are the very first concerto on this CD and also the last one in D minor. Orchestra and soloists have never sounded better interpreting Vivaldi's music than on this CD. And, I think that is saying something because there are many crummy Vivaldi recordings out there. After Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms, Vivaldi has to be one of the "most-recorded" composers of the late 20th-early 21st century and with good reason. His music was nothing short of wonderful and people recognize that.

Vivaldi should always have a strong, "on the string" technique. Some of these other Vivaldi recordings leave much to be desired because they interpret his music as if it were Debussey -- light and airy which does not work. Vivaldi's music, although fresh and light, has to have strings who use long bow strokes in order to give a correct and musical interpretation.

This CD never fails to dazzle me no matter how many times I hear it. Highly recommended.
