Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The brilliant concept of this project, that is, to take one of Western civilization's watershed artistic expressions, Antonio Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' and give it new life, using sounds native to the Far East, amply speaks of the universality of this beloved work. The resulting CD is testimony to the adoring handling of the masterpiece by its new caretakers, the 'Chinese Baroque Players'.
The recording was truly...'live'! Daringly captured on the first 'take', the session was held in a "verdant country setting at a beautiful home in Tai Po". The result was a phenomenally expressive and intimate reading. Musical inaccuracies, alas, do occur here and there, since there was no editing or 're-takes', which takes something away from its sublime potential. Moreover, few of the tempi may sound questionably 'slow' to those accustomed to past virtuosic renditions of these concerti. However, even with these 'flaws' present, the musical sensitivity of the Chinese artists, and the 'soulfulness' of their Chinese instruments more than makes up for it. There is true artistry here! Not only the musicians manage to reproduce for us an 'old warhorse', but they give us a uniquely precious, and original perspective of it. Their stirring playing leads us to fall in love with this music, all over again!
I must admit this recording has made me lose my appetite for the several, good traditional versions of the F/S in my CD collection.
I would think that maestro Antonio would 'have a blast' hearing his music sounding this way! He, too, would likely give it his enthusiastic approval!
