Editorial Reviews

A new addition to the very successful series of super-budget boxes. A 28-CD set of Concertos, Sonatas and major vocal works by one of the most popular Baroque composers of all time. Vivaldi's complete Concertos and Sonatas opus 1-12 plus other concertos and cantatas. Performances drawn mainly from Decca's L'Oiseau-Lyre catalogue featuring the important ensemble / conductor partnerships of Hogwood / AAM and Pickett / NLC as well as Andreas Scholl with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in Nisi Dominus and Salve Regina.

This is a very generous collection of Vivaldi compositions on 28 CDs. Included are many of his concertos incorporating various instruments (see details below), which can be very delightful pieces to enjoy. The performances are all very satisfactory, and some are excellent - with performances by violinist Salvatore Accardo on several of the discs, and many of the others are very well regarded performances by the Academy of Ancient Music, with prominent soloists. This collection also includes the complete contents of a very highly regarded recording of Vivaldi's sacred music, with countertenor Andreas Scholl (disc 28). With most large collections of this type, you can't expect every performance to be the 'best' available, but these are uncommonly good. And for the price this is hard to beat (roughly $2/CD at current pricing, somewhat less than what I paid for it myself just over two years ago).

Some inconsistencies exists in the other reviews to this set regarding the details of the performances included. I clarified this in a brief note to one of the reviews but finally decided to post my own review to make this information more readily available to anyone who may be considering purchasing this set and who wants to be sure that they have the correct information on what it includes. I've also tried to indicate below some of the earlier releases of the various performances, although this is not intended to be comprehensive since these recordings have undoubtably been released numerous times by the Decca/Philips/L'Oiseau-Lyre labels over the years.

To begin with, this collection of 28 CD's includes Vivaldi's complete concertos and sonatas, Opus 1-12, as well as a variety of other sonatas, concertos, and choral works, resulting in a total of over 26 hours of music.

I must admit I have not yet been able to listen to them all, but the quality of the few recordings I have heard is excellent and so is the content. I had been on the look for a Vivaldi Box (I have the Brahms, Chopin and Mahler complete ones in DG and many of the collectors editions) and this one even exceeded my expectations. A bargain for the quality and the oportunity to have a collection that opens Vivaldi to someone that wants to know where to start.

Astonishing performance, sound recording and musical selection for a incredible price.
One "must have" even if You got the same pieces with other recording and performance.

I was actually expecting a bigger box with more order like Brilliant Classics because the CDs are one on top of the other and not vertically one besides another but since what really matters is the music inside I have to say I am very satisfied with this product.

28 cd,s of superlative entertainment. Some people might say Vivaldi is monotonous. I disagree. Its just his style is so distinctive all his music is imbued with it. I am half way through and the sounds of the likes of I Musici and The Academy of Ancient Music are a feast. Vivaldi was one of a kind.
