Vivaldi like you've never heard him,
By
This review is from: Vivaldi: Sonate a Violino, e Basso per Il Cembalo (Audio CD)
Well, almost like you've never heard him -- Gatti's approach on this album reminds me of Wispelewy's Vivaldi cello sonatas on Channel Classics or Jaroussky's more recent Virtuoso Cantatas on Virgin. The playing is fluid and luminous, stressing the sensual and flowing vocal lines of the sonatas, rather than the brash and spikey approach favoured by many recent baroque violinists in playing Vivaldi. Gatti is playing a different violin than he usually does, an Amati, with a sweet and delicate (but nonetheless focused) sound that is perfect for this approach to the music.
On my audiophile system the Glossa recorded sound does have its limitations in terms of both separation and sound stage. On my slightly less than audiophile system the recorded sound is certainly acceptable, though hardly stellar. 5 stars for the interpretation and the playing, minus 1 for the sound quality. If you're interested in baroque violin, this album will cause you to sit up and take notice, whatever its limitations in recorded sound. It may well cause you to rethink, and re-evaluate, these early Vivaldi sonatas.

Vivaldi and...Enrico Gatti ?,
By François Beaudoin "Narcisse Le Québécois" (Québec ( Ville fortifiée), Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vivaldi: Sonate a Violino, e Basso per Il Cembalo (Audio CD)
Enrico Gatti is a disciple of slownness. He already proved it with two recordings of Corelli works (Opera Terza and Opera Quinta). I don't share his philosophy. Why has he recorded the opus II of Vivaldi in 2006 ? Is there something new in these sonatas ? I had the feeling of hearing some old stuff. Of course, there some moments of virtuosity -capriccio, giga-presto, etc. But these sonatas are in genral boring; for example, two long and dull «Preludios» of seven minutes... There's noting amazing in this recording ( Biondi did it before) Don't expect to hear the fantastic sound or the Label Arcana. It is a Glossa sound, very different and disappointing, like this program. Listen to Carmignola and his quest to discover NEW STUFF OF Vivaldi .
