In the Logs game, children help a gopher cross the river and make his way toward the correct answer to a math problem--much like the old game Frogger but with an educational twist. Players also encounter a Save the Universe game (science), a vault that must be unlocked (spelling and vowels), and even a basic music-notation game--well over 20 interactive games in all, plus printable activities. Why should the fun--and learning--stop when the computer shuts down?
The first of two CD-ROMs is part audio CD, containing 10 sing-and-learn songs that can be used in any CD player. As parents, we love this feature; it's great to be able to take the music on the road to reinforce the ideas and facts children are learning when they play the game.
JumpStart 2nd Grade also features built-in Internet hooks for exchanging mail with other JumpStart users and downloading more adventures. And as an added bonus, the program comes with a 30-minute animated VHS story, "Why Did the Bus Stop?" While its animation is not the most elaborate, the tape features characters from the game and helps children learn about counting, telling time, and the five senses.
The JumpStart series is popular, and for good reason: the folks at Knowledge Adventure invest a great deal of time and money into their products, and it shows in this worthy member of the series. (Ages 6 to 8) --Mike Caputo

Jump Start 2nd Grade,

A fun, animated, interactive learning tool which helps children learn while entertaining them. It takes the "pain" out of learning and really holds their attention. My son really believed he was writing to pen pals with the software and it made it more fun for him. It covered the basics of spelling and grammar plus some math skills, geography and more. The kids like to see their own progress as they advance through the different levels.

I feel kind of weird writing this review because I don't even know why I looked it up in the first place, but I thought it might be interesting for potential buyers to get a perspective from someone who's played the game as a child.
I played through this game with my younger brother when we were in elementary school. We both LOVED IT to pieces. The characters are entertaining, the games are engaging and informative, and of course, fun. I loved the loose story and the quest for stamps and have nothing but fond memories of the entire experience. Indeed, I think it says something when even now, many years later, I still look back on this game and smile. I can still remember the music and characters' voices and all the fun times my brother and I had together going through the puzzles. I think games like this really helped instill a love of learning in both my brother and myself. We went on to play Jump Start Third and Fourth Grade - both fantastic games in themselves - and really, I know part of it might just be me being a nostalgic 90's kid in general, but I don't feel like there are enough games like this these days. Too many games are based on marketable characters and merchandise. Here's an old classic for you. It's just for fun and learning. :)

This is good game that will prepare your child for the 2nd grade but may not work with Windows XP Home Edition.
