Slow tempo jazz from a master trombonist,
By George N. Fabian (Mountainside, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vivian (Audio CD)
Some jazz critics have noted that many of the selections on this CD suffer from having the same tempos. There are compensations for this, however. The first and most important is the presence of Mr. Johnson who shows his mastery of his instrument in every selection. There is fine support from the rest of his quintet. Stimulating listening all the way. This CD is in tribute to J.J.'s deceased wife (hence its title) and a most worthy tribute it is. 4 1/2 stars.

Great J J CD!,
This review is from: Vivian (Audio CD)
This Concord release consists of ballads. J J Johnson was one of the greatest trombone players in the history of jazz. This release is a tribute to his late wife, Vivian. It is relaxed, and tenderly executed. Of course J J has so many great cds out this is only one of them. This being a more recent release, the audiophiles out there will appreciate the sound quality.

J.J. Johnson is one of the finest jazz trombonists history has ever known, and this album is one of his best. Do yourself a favor and buy this album. Don't even think about it. If it ever gets split into mp3 format, buy every song, put them in the order that they are presented on this album, and listen to them. The guy is a master and what he recorded is a thing of beauty. Seriously.
