The camera deletes all photos if the battery door is opened, or if the batteries run out. I lost my whole vacation's worth of snorkling photos because the battery door slid open while I was getting ready to hook it up to my computer.

It is also unable to be mounted as a mass storage device, which means that there is no way to recover deleted or lost photos. This thing is horribly-designed, and it is far too easy to lose all your pictures. Don't buy it, seriously.

COPY OF EMAIL I SENT THE COMPANY (READ DETAILS OF WHY THIS ITEM IS TRASH!!):
I was a customer for the first time of your products by buying the Vivitar Underwater digital camera (model #26693) from my local Target for my First Vacation ever to the Bahamas aboard the Carnival Miracle on May 7th - 15th. I chose your camera over the Kodak underwater camera due to the more exposures you advertised with the digital. A decision I FULLY REGRET NOW!

I used the camera first in Grand Turk (placing BRAND NEW BATTERIES in it I purchased from the ship) and took several pics after following the directions carefully. The next day I turned it on to see how many was left for our stop in Nassau and it said it was COMPLETELY EMPTY! At this point I assumed that it was my girlfriend hitting the wrong button (as I read in the manual there was a "clear all" option) and just chalked it up as a loss.

In Nassau we swam with the dolphins at Blue Lagoon and took at least 80 pics with your camera there of us with the dolphins. On the way home I carefully packed it away carefully in a waterproof case to assure that the buttons wouldnt accidentally be pressed.

Now I just uploaded the software to my computer after I got home and followed instructions carefully, as I plugged your camera into my Mac Mini the software said that it "could not locate any photos". I checked and YET AGAIN the camera shows that no photos were taken.

I feel like I got ripped off and lost some awesome pics of our friends and times on the islands due to your malfunctioning camera. It would have cost me more to buy multiple Kodak underwater cameras and I would have had to pay to get a CD and developed, but now I realize it would have been worth it compared to losing priceless memories by trusting in YOUR brand product.

I will be sure to NEVER buy ANY of your products again (even though I have bought your products as presents before). Nothing can replace those memories and I cannot express my disappointment of this inferior product.
I will be contacting a friend of mine who blogs for products on Amazon.com to make sure other do not make the same mistake!

(PS: The Camera only works with software, will not mount on desktop!!)

This camera allowed us to take shots when we wouldn't dare pull out our expensive cameras for the fear of them getting damaged. It can go for a swim and get dropped on the floor. Takes great pics in/under the water.
Also wanted to add one great thing about this camera, we left it outside overnight and it rained. It was really a relief to know that my camera didn't get ruined simply because I forgot to bring it in after swimming!
The kids are having a great time using this camera, I may have to go ahead and order a second one! It is really holding up to being roughly handled. My son uses the camera 1st above the water then underneath and then above again.
The pictures came out surprisingly clear! I'll add some sample photos to the product gallery as soon as I get them...

DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF PLASTIC.
All plastics are waterproof and that's all this "camera" is. I know why Vivitar didn't put an LCD display on this camera...it's so you THINK you're taking pictures with it. It's sad that there are companies out there making worthless products then sell them to people.

Thanks

We bought this camera before we went camping. Part of our itinerary included water activities. Our daughter is a camera fan and insisted she wants her own camera. Being that she is a bit irresponsible we did not want to spend a lot. We figured if it works it works if not not. Were we in for a surprise. It surpassed our expectation by far!! Takes great pics in/under the water, developed beautiful pics, kids and adult friendly.....

Loved this camera - terrific photos, rugged/waterproof as expected, killer price...
This is an excellent underwater camera. We took this camera on our Caribbean cruise to our excursions that included swimming with wales and cave tubing. Easy to use and the photos were clear and captured the subject matter well. You will be pleased with the photo quality and the clear pictures...

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA! I can't believe Vivitar continues to market this product when it has such false claims. We purchased this camera for a once in a lifetime trip to the Philippines, where we swam with whale sharks. We tried taking pictures underwater, but this camera kept resetting and deleting all of our pictures. Towards the end of our swim time, we finally got it to take a few pictures (as indicated by the picture counter on the camera). I was so stressed, trying to make sure that I followed all of the instructions so that our pictures wouldn't be deleted. When we returned from our vacation, I connected the camera to upload our pictures and received the "no photos in camera" message. Thank you Vivitar for erasing precious family memories. I will never be a Vivitar customer again.

I would give this camera a 0 start rating if I could. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!!! I didn't listen to the other reviews and they were right. I just got back from vacation. I followed all the instruction. Didn't let the batteries run down or let the battery door open prematurely. Just tried to get the pictures off of the camera via the computer and “poof" they are gone.

As stated above DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!! You'd have better luck getting underwater pictures by taking a pad of paper and pencil with you while you are diving than using this camera.

We purchased this from Young Explorers and took valuable underwater photos of our once-in-a-lifetime vacation. I followed all of the instructions carefully, but when it was time to upload the images, despite not being anywhere near out of battery, all of the images had been deleted. What a total waste.

You get what you pay for. Our 7 year old son loves to explore the shoreline with his snorkel and mask and find sea creatures. We bought this for Christmas thinking he could take some cool underwater photos during his exploration. This camera is a complete WASTE of money. It only operates with software and drivers that will only install on Windows XP, so it is completely useless to us.

You have been warned.
