Product Description

The Vivitar Digital Off-Shoe Flash Cord works with all dedicated flash units for Canon cameras. One end of the cord plugs into the hotshoe of the camera, and the other has a hotshoe connection for the flash. This allows the flash to be removed from the camera's hot shoe for creative lighting, but the flash still communicates with the camera. Helps eliminate harsh shadows allowing you to take more stunning photos.

The item sent to me by A&R Photo Video Inc is very similar, if not the same, to the one in the picture but it is not made by Vivitar. It is made by Zeikos. Model name is ZE-OCSCC.
Anyway, the equipment is sturdy and feels really solid.
It support E-TTL and E-TTL II by Canon. It means that all features of your Canon flash will keep working.
I liked it a lot. It works well and seems that it will last a lifetime. A keeper.

Was excited to get this and try it out. However with my 60D the 430EXII flash would not communicate with the camera. If you went into the camera's flash menu options it would say the Flash is not attached. You could only use the flash in manual if you wanted to adjust the flash's intensity. This is not what I wanted as I wanted the ETTL to work.

It maybe a very good cord but not getting the ETTL to work I sent it back for a refund.

I connect T2i and 320 EX with this cord and I am satisfied with it.
1. It's made by Vivitar and the quality seems good.
2. It's 4 ft long, twice longer than Canon OC-E3.
3. Both end can be locked. On camera end, this cable has a lock lever like my 320 EX's. On Flash end, the lock on 320 EX can lock into the shoe of the cord.
4. E-TTL II works. It's as accurate as connecting flash directly on camera.
5. High Speed Sync (HSS) works flawlessly. I've tested it with 1/4000 shutter speed and the exposure of the picture is fine.
6. It's price is only 1/5 of Canon OC-E3's.

It works and it is exactly what I needed. The cable has a stop mechanism on the hotshoe and works flawlessly with my 430 ex II, ETTL and all.

At first, I hooked up the flash to the camera with the cord and it didn't work. Some connection wasn't transmitting. After taking the cord off and looking at all the reviews to see if I was doing something wrong... I thought I was going to have to send it back. This was depressing because I was so excited to se this with my new bracket (you know the feeling). Anyway, long story short, I tried connecting in the camera's menu and it didn't register. Then I took the cord completely off of everything again and slapped on the flash to my camera to make sure it was working. It was. THEN the cord went back on... and it worked. Hooray! Five stars because it's working better than expected now.

I have had connecting issues with Vivitar before (as in buying a Vivitar flash) and the product worked for a while then the sensors were not read by the Canon camera. I looked it up and it's a common problem. I was being cheap. Then I realized I had to buy the Canon flash. The first 8 months of the Vivitar was fine and at 100 dollars I couldn't really complain considering Canon's are 300+. The point is, I spent more money on trying to be cheap than if I just got the Canon in the first place.

What does this have to do with anything? Why did you buy another Vivitar product?

I bought this cord because it is cheap and I wanted to see if I really would use it. I only want to let anyone who cares know that Vivitar is not intended to work a super-long time. It just doesn't. If you are using this cord as a demo to see if using a bracket is something you will want to use or testing out lighting creativity, this is a great little cord for the money. Much better than dropping a ton of money on a cord you may not use after the first week of having it. If you KNOW for certain you need a longterm cord or flash (you will always need the flash) then buy from the camera's brand.

The Flash cord I received is branded "focus", see the picture attached. If anything it may be better for some as the part that mounts on the camera hot shoe has another hot shoe on top of it rather than a smooth top in the description. Again see my photo. This allows you to have two flashes mounted on the camera and with the built in switch control which one fires. Unless one is an optical slave they will not fire at the same time though.
I have tested both the top mounted and the cord mounted shoes, and they both communicate with the camera based on the switch position. When the flash is mounted on the off position shoe, the camera says cannot communicate with the flash ; off or incompatible. The TTL functions well as do all the in the camera control functions for all the features your flash is capable of. The cord is about 18" long coiled and stretches to about 3ft. The locking mechanism is the rotary plastic ring screw, and the camera mount is all plastic shoe. A very handy device for no red eye, dual flash setup and macro photographs where a long lens would throw a shadow and a standard flash would aim too high.

I was a bit concerned about this Vivitar flash cord when I first received it. I couldn't get the flash to be recognized by the camera (Canon T3i Rebel body and Canon 430EX flash). I had to disconnect and reconnect a few times to get the contacts to line up correctly, but once they did, I fell in love with the off-camera flash! I purchased a flash softbox and a bracket also, so now I really look like I know what I'm doing in terms of my camera setup. I think these purchases will open up a new world for me and greatly improve my photos.

The Cord does have a very nice length and worked perfectly with my Canon Speedlite 430EX II.
Perhaps I missed the information on the product, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found that there is a place to put the mounted flash on a tripod, and a way to attach it to a flash Bracket. I wish that that would have been displayed on the images of the product, or in the information on it.
The only thing to complain about is that when the cord is extended, (and this is especially true when it is new) it will pull on the camera a lot. Once when trying it out, my SLR, mounted on a tripod, tipped over when I moved the flash a distance away from the camera.
Over all, I am very glad I bought it!
