Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Vivitar's Vivicam is a tri-mode digital still/PC camera, offering an affordable choice for photographers who desire one device for digital images, video-clip capability, and web-based video use. The Vivicam 10 features compact, streamline, high-impact styling. With 8MB of internal memory, the Vivicam 10 can store up to 70 images at VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels)--excellent for entry-level digital photography, school reports, email, or Web page use.

The image quality of the Vivicam 10 is outstanding for cameras in this price and resolution class. Users can easily download images through a USB port for viewing or editing with the supplied Arcsoft software.

Other features include macro-mode, auto flash, and an automatic power saving logic. Based upon CMOS imaging technology and automatic power saving features, the V10 and 20 can capture hundreds of images, using only two AA alkaline batteries. While connected to a PC the camera draws power from the USB bus, thereby extending battery life even further.

The Vivicam 10 has a tripod socket and self-timer. It includes a small swivel-tripod that is ideal for portraiture and web-video use. A soft carrying pouch is also included for portability on one’s belt.

The video-clip capability of the Vivicam 10 is a truly amazing feature for an entry-level digital camera in this price range. The video clip function allows users to capture sequential CIF images (320 x 240 resolution) at a rate of approximately three frames per second. (The camera does not need to be tethered to a PC.) The number of images is limited to available memory. In 8 MB, the Vivicam 10 can capture 200 to 300 sequential CIF frames. Returning back to the home PC, the user can convert those sequential CIF frames into a movie (AVI format) video using a special application software, known as AVI Maker, which is included with the camera.

AVI Maker includes the ability to accelerate the frame rate of the video sequence to rates of 15 or even 30 fps. AVI movies may be emailed, or further converted to streaming video formats for web use using third-party software (not included). This is a powerful feature for such an affordable digital camera.

The Vivicam 10 is compatible with Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP.

3.0 out of 5 stars This digital camera should have been so much better., June 3, 2002
This review is from: Vivitar ViviCam 10 Digital Camera (Electronics)
This camera is poorly designed.

1. with the view finder and lens on the left side (when viewed from the back) it is nothing uncommon to pick up the camera and place your fingers on the view finder or lens.

2. the software to view the pictures in memory will only show thumbnail images, making it difficult to select the best quality pictires to send to the computer.

3. the Arcsoft software that is used to view the pictures full screen or save to disk as a .JPG or other formats is no better than the software to transfer the pictures to the computer. You can view the picture about 50% normal size, but if you want to view it full screen then save it to disk, you have to expand the picture. click the mouse to go back to the software then click save before you can save the image.

3. This camera only has two modes.

a. 320x200 (if memory serves) ( was able to take 167 photos in this mode before filling up the memory.

b. 640x480 I was able to take 51 photos in this mode before filling up the memory.

3. this camera does not allow you to see the pictures before connecting it to the computer at all.

4. this camera does not offer a zoom feature at all.

5. there is no way to add additional memory.

This camera DOES have some good features.

1. the USB port to transfer the pictures to the computer is quick.

2. this camera has MANY different modes of operation.

a. take photos when it is sunny, overcast, inside a well lighted room, inside a darker room.

b. DOES have a built in strobe, so you can take photos just about any time. The two Pencam digital cameras I looked at did not have a strobe at all, and this camera was less expensive than both of those.

c. Take one photo after another (about every 1/2 a second)

d. Auto timer so you can get in the photo too.

e. This camera uses two AA batteries that can be bought almost anyhere.

If you want a point and shoot camera, or want to use pictures in auctions this camera will serve you well.

If you want the ability to zoom in, take pictures of higher resolution, or see what you are going to get before plugging in the USB port, then view the better quality digital cameras such as the Canon, Minolta, or Olympus offerings (I picked these brands because I have had success with these brands of 35 mm cameras, and I know the optics are good.

E-Mail if you have questions or comments; Two Bears.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Brainer, November 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Vivitar ViviCam 10 Digital Camera (Electronics)
Cheap. Simple. Works the first time.
I've never been a gadget kind of person, and have never had a digital camera. I checked several search engines and had simple criteria: cheap, USB-software included, and flash.
This unit was priced way below others that met that criteria (mainly the flash), and looked solid when I checked the details.
I wanted pictures just for email and a website, so the image quality this produces is just fine for me. You want higher-quality, printable photos, and you'll pay more.
I was pleasantly surprised by this unit: I pulled it out of the box, put the batteries in (these are included), read the manual (how to set it to auto-flash?), loaded the software, and was off and running. 2 minutes later I emailed a picture of my cat Mango to my daughter. No brainer!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great buy!, June 2, 2002

I bought this for my mother as a birthday gift. Considering the price, I was not expecting much. There were many things I liked about this camera.

1. The pictures are crisp and clear, much higher resolution and clarity than I initially expected.

2. The software is easy and simple to install.

3. It comes with everything you need (carrying case, batteries etc..)

4. It records video!

I have not tried to "video recording" feature yet. But to have all these features in such a low priced camera is amazing. I am going to purchase one for myself.
