Buy the DRG Label Version,

This review is from: Vivre Pour Vivre (Original Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Folks: if you want VIVRE POUR VIVRE and A MAN AND A WOMAN (UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME), DRG records has them on ONE CD. Don't pay this outrageous price, however nice the score (which it is).As for the score itself, VIVRE POUR VIVRE continued the format of Lai's prior A MAN AND A WOMAN: Nicole Croiselle humming wordless vocals, Lai plucking electrified organ and piano and clavichord, twangy electric guitars that evoke bandeons for some reason, a couple of tasty songs with lyrics ("Now You Want to be Loved" is great - "is your heart still as pure/as it was in your dream?"), and a variation on the "Today It's You" orchestration on Side 2 of A MAN AND A WOMAN which made that album so stunning in its day called "Theme du Robert" (yes, play LOUD). There are some retreads here: a vocal version of the 'Today It's You' lyrics from A MAN AND A WOMAN winds up somehow in THIS film a year later, and Louis Alderbert's crooning is suitably misplaced in that 60s way against a wailing studio 'rock' band; and, a rather dispensable thing called "Zoom", which one should just program into oblivion. Otherwise, classic Lai, and many tasty versions of the lush title song.

International Style 60's French Score is Great...,

Perhaps it is simply my nostalgia for the film, but this soundtrack is very listenable. Composer, Franics Lai rises above his usual gallic schmalz for this score and gives the listener some very memorable melodies, some drama and bit of jazz and disco-flavored interludes that capture something of the period. "Theme de Candace" is dramatic and passionate without lapsing into the dreary sap of most of his earlier compositions. The main theme, "Vivre Pour Vivre," is very even and created a nice thread that runs throughout the film. It is solid enough to warrant its' recurrence on the disc. There's a bit more variety here than on other soundtracks for so-called "international" films, too, which makes it a good choice for the listener who may not have seen the film. The biggest problem is the import price, which is excessive to say the very least! At 29.95 even on Amazon, this reviewer recommends waiting for a more responsibly priced US release. Not even the most hard-core romantic will find this price palatable. It is only slightly more resonable than a Big Mac in Paris, and that's all folks!
