Product Description

Su just wants to sit in a dark corner for a quiet drink when she spots a newborn vampire across the bar. He's confused, and he's starting to draw attention to himself. And he's hot.

So Su decides to give him a few pointers. Then she realizes that the reason this baby vamp is wandering around without a protective escort is that she killed his parent vamp earlier that night.

Now Su feels responsible. A newborn vampire is helpless until he regains his memories and learns how to act like a vampire. Su knows enough about vamps to be able to teach him that. But Su has her own problems. She doesn't have much of a memory, either, and while she's not a vampire, she's not exactly human.

Su doesn't know what she is, and she doesn't have a kindly stranger in a bar to tell her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very promising gritty new series, January 22, 2012

This review is from: Vixen (Kindle Edition)
I'm surprised no one has written a review for this book yet. I bought it on a whim on Kindle, and am very glad that I did. I really enjoyed both the story and the complex characters (even the background characters are well rounded). Nic Silver has created a unique take on the Urban Fantasy genre, that was a thrilling read. I liked it enough to write this, my first review on Amazon.

I don't want to give away any of the plot, so I'll just say that Su (the main character) is smart, tough and vulnerable all at the same time. Though it has a lot of the common elements of urban fantasy: Vampires, Werewolves, a character with Amnesia and a kidnapping, it didn't feel cliche at all to me. The world building was original and very believable, and there is a good reason for all those plot elements.

This book is beautifully written, with poetic descriptions that I could see in my minds eye. It's so well written, that my only complaint was that some of the scenes weren't longer. For example, there's a fight where Su feels like everything is moving in slow motion around her that is so lyrical that it felt to me like it ended too quickly.

One quick note: This is not a book for young readers, or the easily offended. There are several explicit sex scenes between Su and her lovers, (and one attack, as well as a couple of gay scenes). They don't feel gratuitous at all, instead the sex shows Su to be a adult woman with a healthy sexuality, unlike a lot of the eternally conflicted heroines in other urban fantasy and paranormal romance books. There is also a sly sense of humor throughout the book, that I really enjoyed.

I look forward to the next book in this series, and highly recommend getting a copy of Vixen.

More About the Author

Nic Silver lives like a hermit on the edge of the woods, but haunts used bookstores like a wraith. He fully expected to be found someday as a mummified, beardy old corpse crushed under a toppled to-be-read pile, but the rise of e-books has made that somewhat less likely, though the books will always outnumber even the dustbunnies. Nic will read just about anything, including the instructions on the back of medicine bottles, but has a particular fondness for good stories with a hint of magic. He writes dark, sexy urban fantasy, and sometimes dreams in black and white.
