A Ussachevsky Fan,
By
This review is from: Vladimir Ussachevsky: Film Music (Audio CD)
This music makes me want to find the movies it was written for. There is something less alienated and alienating about this music than much produced by others (or is it just me?), or is it only that I knew the man, if only for a few brief moments, late in his life. His artistic credo was something like, each preserved sound is chosen for its musical qualities, whatever they may be, and in the cases of attaching them to visuals in the movies, an integration suggesting connection rather than alienation, even if one of the movies, No Exit (play by Sartre, who was mostly a fairly happy man), was precisely about a kind of alienation, a hell made up of other people. For me, anything Ussachevsky did is essential stuff to have and replay from time to time, mood music perhaps for a very highbrow gathering of esthetes. Perhaps. Comfortable subdued surroundings, comfortable seating. Wine and cheese anyone!
