5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Brazilian music., February 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)
A wonderful variety of spare, creative arrangements, giving each piece a unique feel. The most common emotional impression might be described as 'haunting' but some numbers range into Satie-like humor or old-world melancholy (and no, I don't understand the lyrics). Melodies and harmonic progressions have surprising and pleasing turns. Easy to like on the first listening but interesting enough to last. A beautiful voice paired with great song selection and creative arrangements. I listen to a lot of Brazilian Music, and she's my absolute favorite. 'Iaia' is just as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful, Expressive Voice . . ., December 23, 2004
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)
Along with her classic recording of Baden-Powell's "Afro-Sambas" with Paulo Bellinati, Monica's performance on Voadeiro--the range of material and sources--the very interesting orchestrations (easily overlooked) make this recording another "instant classic". Her voice is like liquid silk (after a few Marlboros).

This recording transcends style and will satisfy the lover of jazz, brazilian, folk and country and western or country or western, who knows.

Just buy it!! If you don't like it, blame me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, June 15, 2004

I saw a review in the New York Times of Monica Salmaso's appearance in New York. She had just won the Brazillian equivalent of "Best New Artist", so I thought I would take a chance. I was blown away. I have become wary of purchasing new artists, and the collection by the better known artists seems to be so repetitive. This was a very strong performance by a new artist with new material (at least to me. I recognized only one selection from a previous Joao Gilberto album). 5 of the cuts became instant favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a stunning album, December 2, 2006
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)
monica salmaso is graced with one of the most beautiful voices in all of Brazilian music, singing old songs like the 50s song "Ave Maria no Morro" with such finesse and poise. the lovely small-group arrangements and gifted piano of Benjamim Taubkin make it even better. if you like Brazilian music you must get this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can never get enough!, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)
Brilliant!!! Monica Salmaso is an incredible singer, very beautiful voice, excellent timing. She really gives (known) songs a (new) meaning, a (new) life, a (new) breath! I had the priviledge and pleasure to hear her singing live and it was magical, i have all her albums now. I am happy that she appeared very kind and modest too.
This music is maybe not always easy in the beginning, but it grows on you and before you know it, you are addicted. Salmaso's version of Buarque's "Valsinha" is delicious, "Canto Em Qualquer Canto" is utterly beautiful and her "Ave Maria No Morro" is indeed haunting! I can never get enough, thank you so much, obrigada, Monica!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantástica !, February 1, 2008
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)
Ms. Salmaso has a very fine voice. The arrangements are sparse but beautiful. I would highly recommend this disc. In fact, I have purchased her Noites de Gala Samba Na Rua too.

5.0 out of 5 stars a distinctive voice from Brazil:Monica Salmosa, January 10, 2007
This review is from: Voadeira (Audio CD)
I caught one of Monica Salmosa songs on a Putamayo release of Women of Latin America: "Dançapé" It had several ingredients that kept me listening; Monica's deep saltry voice, nice arrangements of accordion with that distinctive percussive sound that we know only as Brazillian. One buys a new album with hope and alas the amazon mp3 cuts helped to build that confidence. The album is beyond satisfying, to say the least.
Ms. Salmosa is touted to be a distinctive voice in her country and I would have to agree, but whoever is arranging and writing the music behind her has caught her distinctiveness with nice contrast and open sound that fabulously frames her. Many songs are pensive like "Valsinha" but others have that festive sound that well speaks of Brasiliero to me Like "Canário Do Reino". Then one looks at who wrote the songs and its a whose who of the great Brazillian composers. Putamayo collectors picked well as "Dançapé" is my favorite as it steps out the box into a new realm. I am ready to add more of her albums to my collection. Her music is a joy to listen to and have. It is an album that never gets put away. If you like Brazillian music I recommended "Voadeira."
