5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for the SAT!, December 22, 2002
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
It's funny. I got a 770/800 on my verbal SAT. My friends can't believe I did it by studying a book comprised of funny little cartoons and rhymes. It sounds funny, but it works!

Studying from a gigantic book of thousands of vocab words are boring and scary. This book however, actually makes it fun! I didn't think useless vocab which is tested on the SAT could be fun to learn, but I was wrong.

Great book. If you are studying for the SAT verbal...Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Words Everyone Should Know, October 29, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
Vocabulary Cartoons II contains 290 key words presented through cartoons.

Each word contains a "link" word which is intended to serve as a mnemonic device, helping you to associate the new word to the word that you may be more familiar with. A good deal of the "link" words rhyme with the "key" word. To make the association even easier, the authors have provided a phrase which is easy to remember as in "We LAMENT that Joe got buried in CEMENT". This phrase is portrayed through a cartoon, providing a visual mnemonic.

Under each cartoon, you'll find three sentences with contexts where it may be appropriate to use the "key" word. These examples will also help you to develop the feel for the word, as well as to create more associations to the key word.

The authors have appropriately said that this book is "for everyone". The words in this vocabulary book seem to be for the most part on a high-school level. The words in Vocabulary Cartoons II are no harder than those in the Vocabulary Cartoons - you just get to learn more words.

For greater challenge, you may want to check out Verbal Advantage.

5.0 out of 5 stars It actually works., May 19, 2001
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
I'm 15 this year, and I actually enjoy this book. Believe me, I've tried for a while to find a good vocab book. "1100 words you need to know" seriously sux, and the rest of them are pretty bad too. The only other good one is a very small section in "Up your score". But anyway, this book is a page per word with a huge picture in the middle and a few sentences with the word in it at the bottom. Then once in a while there's a review. THis is the first book I have used where I have actually remembered the word after say about a week. And if you don't want to fall asleep memorizing the word in the first place, this is the book for you. Buy it. It works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Into That SAT Test Without It!, September 8, 2000

Everyone know how crucial a good SAT score can be for a student to get into the college of their choice. More and more emphasis is placed on it annually. And as a rule, for most students it is the verbal portion that does them in.

Well, Vocabulary Cartoons II to the rescue! The often silly cartoons give you just the memory peg you will need to remember words that you are sure to see on the SAT exam. I reccomend this book highly for classroom and individual uses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for remembering words and their meanings!, August 3, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
I bought this book for my son, who will be going to Ninth Grade to help build his vocabulary. Not only is this book helping to build my childs vocabulary but how it can be used in a sentence. The book is "Great" because of its content. It defines the word, give one an idea how it should be pronounced, and use a cartoon to link it in a sentence. Further, use the word to construct threee sentences. Because of these examples, my child will find it easier to make a sentence of his own. The author makes it easier for a reader to grasp of what is being defined. I believe this book will play vital tool for my son's education. The author went to the extent, to let the reader or my son know what figure of speech the word being defined to be. Whether it is an adjective, noun or verb. Also, the book is good for me, that is, being a foreigner, it helps me pronounce words the way it should be pronounced, the American Version.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent vocab builder, January 24, 2004
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
This book is awesome for those who need to crack up their vocab for the SATs as it is a key to getting a high score. This book is very simply and easy to use and for every ten words you get a couple of excercises to go through what you have learnt (just to make sure you did learn em). I went through this book really quickly (around 6 days) as it everything there was clear and easy to remember so you can zoom through the book with no problem and remember most of the words very quickly without re-reading them to yourself because as soon as you see the word the picture which it gives ya pops into ur head and the meaning should be there.

5.0 out of 5 stars At first glance, September 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
At first glance my 11 year old son was able to successfully learn the first 5 words. He told me he would picture the cartoon in his head and he was able to recall the meaning. We are going to incorporate 5 words a night at the dinner table, to enhance all of our vocabulary's. I am now going to purchase Vocabulary Cartoons I.

This is a most enjoyable way to study vocabulary. I recommend it to all my students, not just for SAT. I only wish it were used with Power Point also. Students remember the cartoon clues and have fun making up some of their own. Aurelia Shaw

Although I like Vocabulary Cartoon I better, Vocabulary Cartoon II is also an excellent book for any high schooler who wants to improve her/his vocabulary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Picturing New Words, July 5, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vocabulary Cartoons II, SAT Word Power (Paperback)
Trying to teach vocabulary can be tedious and the definitions only seem to stay with my students until the day of the test. With the illustrations in this text and in Vocabulary Cartoons I, the students seemed to remember the words and even use them more frequently in their writing and discussions. I even saw the students using the texts during SSR.
