Book Description

July 1, 2005
Students learn the sources of hundreds of vocabulary words with this new, multi-year program. Unlike many programs that depend on rote memorization, Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots incorporates a variety of techniques to teach students the skills they need to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, while also expanding sight vocabulary. Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots reinforces new words through: * a format that capitalizes on word families * associative hooks and visuals to jog the memory * building language-analysis skills * exercises designed for maximum retention Many vocabulary programs are focused on preparing students for a test from week to week, but Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots teaches skills that they can use for a lifetime. * Teaches word analysis skills by focusing on root words. * Additional notes on word and phrase histories build interest * Humorous visual mnemonics reinforce recall. Book Four is recommended for 10th Grade. This is a student classroom edition. Tests and Answer Keys are available through the publisher but are only sold to schools and teachers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still memorizing word lists, April 13, 2010
By
LK (Tucson, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots: Book Four (Paperback)
FYI: I am a high school teacher.

My one complaint about this series is that students really only learn word lists rather than the roots themselves (and how to use the roots). Each unit selects approximately 4 roots to work with, which is fine. But then they chose approximately 3 words per root with which to work for the entire unit. All of the practice exercises (and the quizzes in the accompanying teacher's edition) only use those 12 words, and the roots themselves become irrelevant since each word is also defined at the start of each unit (you can see for yourself on the sample pages here on Amazon). The whole point of teaching these roots is to show/teach students one method of assisting them in defining new words they haven't seen before. If they never learn the roots themselves, then we're back to just memorizing lists of words.

This vocabulary program is better than nothing, but in the end I find that it doesn't accomplish my goal.

This review is from: Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots: Book Four (Paperback)
This is used with middle to high school students and helps them build a solid understanding of the roots that will help them in studies and testing.
