Still memorizing word lists,
By LK (Tucson, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots: Book Four (Paperback)
FYI: I am a high school teacher.
My one complaint about this series is that students really only learn word lists rather than the roots themselves (and how to use the roots). Each unit selects approximately 4 roots to work with, which is fine. But then they chose approximately 3 words per root with which to work for the entire unit. All of the practice exercises (and the quizzes in the accompanying teacher's edition) only use those 12 words, and the roots themselves become irrelevant since each word is also defined at the start of each unit (you can see for yourself on the sample pages here on Amazon). The whole point of teaching these roots is to show/teach students one method of assisting them in defining new words they haven't seen before. If they never learn the roots themselves, then we're back to just memorizing lists of words. This vocabulary program is better than nothing, but in the end I find that it doesn't accomplish my goal.

Vocab and Roots for a good base,

This review is from: Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots: Book Four (Paperback)
This is used with middle to high school students and helps them build a solid understanding of the roots that will help them in studies and testing.
