3.0 out of 5 stars Decent review, but is lacking., April 13, 2004
This review is from: Vocabulearn-Russian/English Level 1: Instant Vocabulary Fast, Fun, and Functional (Audio Cassette)
This is a fairly decent set of tapes if you want to jog your memory. It contains sections on nouns, adjectives, verbs, and phrases, with practice from both english -> russian, and russian -> english. There were, however, some areas that it needs work on. I have the equivilent of an AA in russian (DLPT scores 2+, 2+), and went through a year long intensive course in the language, yet there are some words on this tape that are not really found in common speech, or used VERY rarely. Instead of concentrating on the important words to enable to speaker to carry on a conversation, about a quarter of the words (especially in the adjectives and verbs) would be very difficult for a level one student to understand and use in a conversation. Also, some of the words lack context, which would change the actual word used if given properly. There were times where I could think of three to four words, with which I could have responded. Lastly, on the verb section, they only introduce one form of the verb, the imperfective. Although Russian is fairly regular in forming perfective verbs from the imperfective form, several of the verbs were irregular (for example: the verb 'to jump' is prygat' (imp), with a irregular perfective of prygnut'). I'm not saying that I am a master of the russian language...all I'm saying that this wouldnt be as helpful as it could be to a level one student.
