Eddie gone funky ! ! !, August 22, 2002

This compilation features some of Eddie's later stuff on the MUSE label (which later became .32 Jazz.) It focuses on some of the funky stuff he was doing in the mid-latter '60s and inclues features cuts off of one of my favorite (long out of print) albums of his "Still On On The Planet". If you love Eddie, the Bebop singer, tunes like Billie's Bounce, Night in Tunisia and Ornithology and So What definitely won't leave you wanting (you can really hear him bugging out in Tunisia !), however on other tunes Eddie get's purrrrrrrrrty darn funky and takes on the '70s thing head on... "Zap ! Carnivorous" possibly being the climax of his career... this funky rhodes driven tune has a bit of irony in it, in that he tackles the theme of urban crime and violence.... somthing Eddie himself would fall tragic victim to only a few years later. The only disappointing thing about this album is that CHAMELEONS one of Eddie's best, wildest and funkiest vocalizations didn't make the cut, but there's plenty of other food for thought... from piano driven hard bop to funky '70s fusion... dare I say this album will serve not only as a gap in any CD collection, but a great intro to Eddie at his peek ! Delightful surprize : Eddie funks up an old LESTER YOUNG rhythm change (Lester Leaps in) with a funky brought up to date version of a tune he calls I GOT THE BLUES. This was one of the tunes that got me hooked on Eddie in the first place !

Here's Eddie Jefferson, the originator of the singing style from which king pleasure, annie ross, and manhattan transfer took their cue, going at it, original style. Full of funky beats and Eddie's out of this world, unique phrasing, you'll see why the pioneer is still the greatest.

One (nearly) complete album, and a few other tracks, December 15, 2009

"Vocal Ease" contains all but one track (Trane's Blues) from "Things Are Getting Better," one track from "The Liveliest" (So What), and five from "Still On The Planet" (which has been re-released as "Godfather Of Vocalese"). For Eddie Jefferson's fans, this is a valuable release: the sound quality is clear and warm, the bands are great, and a track from "The Liveliest," which has never been re-issued on CD, is enough for collectors to purchase it.
