Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Luomo is the newest alias of the artist known best as Vladislav Delay, whose austerely minimalist dub-influenced tech-house is the stock in trade of the Chain Reaction and (to a lesser extent) Mille Plateaux labels. The extent to which fans of that sound are interested in this release should be partly the extent to which their tastes extend to the application of that aesthetic to vocal house-music tracks, which is what Mille Plateaux's Force Tracks imprint was created to explore. Although the more abstract house producers have often treated singers as source material hardly different from the electronic elements of the mix, the notion that vocals represent a "human" element, or at least a connection to the world of song, is hard to shake. Luomo may indeed shake you of that idea, as the vocals are just another one of the many layers on these dense tracks, often not appearing until after many minutes of slow accretion of sounds, at which time a few words or phrases are electronically processed and looped endlessly. All of which makes the track "Tessio" even more startling, when a full-fledged multi-voiced R&B song worthy of the Paradise Garage suddenly appears. Even from a musician who has been heading in a half-dozen directions at once over the past year, this is quite a surprising release. -Bob Bannister

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to that clueless guy who gave only one star, April 19, 2003
By A Customer

This disc appeared when micro/click house producers started mimicking each other...Delay proved his signature deep sea bubbling soundscape can work really well with soulful house music.

Although not in the same vein, I recommend those who want to listen to more of microhouse stuff that are not cliched to try Akufen or Geez'n'Gosh, Pantytec, and Safety Scissors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Artist. Brilliant House., October 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Vocalcity (Audio CD)
Luomo is Vladislav Delay. Already making waves with his Chain Reaction-style "Clicks n Cuts" tech-dub, on Vocalcity he weaves some of the most gorgeous House tracks around. Really just a collection of his 12" releases on Force Tracks... everything holds together as an album pretty well. This is an album equally suited for the bedroom or the dancefloor. The sound is fresh and vibrant, and the rhythm is at a natural, very organic pace... highly recommended.

Also check out his releases as Vladislav Delay. They're quite different, but equally as brilliant in their own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CULT-CLASSIC!!!, December 16, 2003
This review is from: Vocalcity (Audio CD)
You may be blown away by the length of most of the songs on Luomo's Vocal City, but for the extended durations you will be moved like no other Dance CD out there. Chalked full of thunderous basslines, electrifying synth-rhythms, minimal vocals and superb mixing, "Vocal City" is sure to become, if it isn't already, a cult-classic. This is the perfect party CD to throw in if you don't want to change out CDs all night, especially at the wrong times!
