There are a lot of collections and anthologies out there that claim to have the best Cuban vocalists and songs. Don't pay any attention. "Voces Inolvidables Cubanas" , both Volumen 1 and 2, are the REAL THING. Whoever chose the material for these compilations knew exactly what he or she was doing. These are some of the greatest recordings ever done by some of the greatest Cuban singers in history. There is not a single bad cut in either volume. You get hit after hit without fillers or rarities. It is really amazing the amount of great artists that Cuba produced before the fatidic revolution. Note that each vocalist has its own unique style and sound.
In reference to the audio quality I must admit that no sophisticated digital remastering was used, since these are no frills moderate priced releases. However the over all sound is good or acceptable except for Barbarito Diez on Volumen 1 where they used a 78rpm disc and you can hear the pops and cracks. It didn't bother me because Barbarito's golden voice rises over any technical defects. I truly believe you won't find a better sampler of Cuban legends anywhere and I urge you to buy both volumes. And if you lived through the 1950s when most of these recordings were made you are in for an emotional reencounter with the golden years of the Cuban bolero and its greatest stars.
I bought this for my parents for Christmas. They haven't stopped raving about it. It includes artists and songs they used to listen to when they were kids in Cuba and it brought back many wonderful memories. Highly recommended, along with Volume 2.
