An Afro-Latino Jazz party on a CD!,
By twistyhair "Fully present today" (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vodou Dance, Vol. 4 (Audio CD)
Voudou Dance is one of all-time my favorite albums because there is something here for every one of my moods, yet it all works as an ensemble. This spans the spectrum from 'Get up and dance now!' to 'slow down for quiet contemplation' effortlessly.
Bill Summers & Irvin Mayfield basically have travelled to places throughout the American south, South America and the Caribbean to find what I would call the 'keepers of spirit'. In each location, they recorded and jammed along with master drummers, singers, percussionists and whoever else was keeping the flame. Bill Summers is an ethnomusicologist, but there is nothing that feels academic about this project. In fact, if you can keep from moving while you listen, you may be on life-support (Check out "Creole Groove" if you have any doubts). Listening to this album almost earns you an instant Ph.D. in African music in the Diaspora. It is fascinating to hear the various ways in which the African spirit moves and evolves. I highly recommend and am a bit confused that I'm the first reviewer
