Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These two volumes are the newest additions to the Vogue "Knitting on the Go" series, which features small-format pattern books designed to be easily carried in a knitting bag. Baby Gifts features contemporary designs by well-known designers such as Sasha Kagan, Nicky Epstein, Jo Sharp, and Jean Moss, while Vintage Knits includes patterns reminiscent of knitwear styles from the 1920s to the 1970s. Patterns are graded by level of difficulty from very easy to expert, with most settling into the intermediate range. Readers of Vogue Knitting magazine will recognize the excellent instructions and illustrations; librarians will be pleased that these latest additions to the series appear to have sturdier bindings. A good choice for any public library knitting collection, but if you can only purchase one, Baby Gifts will give you more knockout designs for the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but..., August 28, 2001

... not as good as the other "On the Go" books. Starting with the good points, the Vogue Knitting folks continue to provide easy-to-follow instructions, great photographs and some cute projects. However, I was disappointed with the lack of variety. I was hoping to find gorgeous angora twinsets, jewelneck pullovers, etc., but most of the patterns were for kids and babies; not much help if you want vintage items for adults. Even though the patterns were cute, nothing really leapt out at me, as if to say "you have to make this next!" Similarly, none of the items struck me as being from a particular era, more of a generic late 50s-early 60s style redux. There was a lot of knitting going on before and after this period, and it would have been nice to have a sampling that spanned a bit more time. I think an expanded "Vintage Knits" would be better suited to one of VK's big collections, rather than an "On the Go" format. In short, pick this one up for kid's things, but if you are expecting a variety of truly vintage patterns, or want to make vintage knits for yourself, this probably isn't the best choice for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars very so-so, July 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Vogue Knitting on the Go: Vintage Knits (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I knew there were a few really cute patterns in it I wanted. There's a really lovely bed sweater, too cute bunny booties for babies and a shoulderette. A lot of the patterns are really ugly though...a cropped sweater? No thanks. Reading through the book though I'm noticing that the directions are horribly vague and difficult to follow. I'm sure I can slosh my way through but it definitely makes knitting these beautiful items a lot less fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great new "old" looks, March 9, 2001

Really cute "old" classics, including baby bunny slippers, a few socks, a few sweaters, hats and a sleeveless cable sweater I can't wait to make.
