4.0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy Stitch Libraries
The series of Vogue Stitch Libraries are by no means intended to be as complete as Barbara Walkers or probably even the Harmony guides. However, their production values are SOOOOOOO much better that I find myself going to these in order to get a better view and more inspiration than the Walker or Harmony guides. If you can only afford one set of stitch dictionaries,...

While this is a very comprehensive collection of color patterns, I would not say that it is the COMPLETE resource. As far as I can tell, the how-to section includes just 2 pages that describe yarn-overs, increases and decreases.

Vogue should be ashamed of themselves to not include a discussion of stranding and weaving techniques, or even the simple instructions of crossing over yarns in jacquard and intarsia so as to not have a hole in the finished work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Color is the thing ..., November 29, 2006
By
This review is from: The Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume Three: Color Knitting: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary from the Editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine (Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series) (Hardcover)
Collecting together more than 200 color knitting patterns from the pages of Vogue Knitting magazine, Color Knitting is the third volume in the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary series. Calling these volumes the "ultimate stitch dictionary," the editors of Vogue Knitting magazine have selected a range of designs sure to challenge and inspire knitters of all skill levels. For each pattern, a large sample swatch is shown; some in quite unusual color choices.

Color Knitting is made up of five chapters: Two Color, Fair Isle/Multicolor,
Intarsia/Motifs, Adding Texture, and Slip Stitch. In each chapter the patterns are organized from easiest to hardest. The patterns in the first three chapters are presented as graphs only. The final two sections, which incorporate both stitch patterns as well as color, are presented with both charts and written instructions.

Color, perhaps more than any other element of design, is subjective. Everyone has preferred colors, and the colors in which a design is shown can lead one to reject it without assessing the pattern itself. To provide an overall flow to the stitch dictionary, the editors have presented each chapter in a different palette. For this to be a useful volume, knitters must use it as a starting point, find their own preferred color scheme and be creative.

Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series
Vol. 1 - Knit & Purl
Vol. 2 - Cable Knitting
Vol. 3 - Color Knitting

Armchair Interviews says: Unique look at color use.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mere Recycling, February 20, 2007

Hardly comprehensive. As far as I can tell, all of the patterns are just recycled from designs in the Vogue Knitting Magazine during the 80's and 90's, but if you're entirely new to this knitting thing, it serves to demonstrate how colour works in knitting, in the broadest sense. A real disappointment after the first two decent volumes in the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars A frustrating disappointment, March 13, 2009
This review is from: The Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume Three: Color Knitting: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary from the Editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine (Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series) (Hardcover)
I checked this book out from the library. I'm a new knitter and I'm finding out I'm especially fond of stitch dictionaries, but can't possibly afford all that I want. And I haven't yet seen the previous 2 volumes. In this book I liked looking at new/different color interpretations of the stitches patterns. But it was also a huge disappointment and very annoying, because a great many of the swatches weren't blocked. I'm absolutely stunned that the folks at Vogue would knit up swatches, then plop them down to take photographs without even blocking them. I really can't even fathom why they thought it was okay to do that. The stitches and patterns are best viewed and easier to study only when the swatches have been thoughtfully blocked. Otherwise the stitches look distorted and the fabric is rippled and lumpy. I'd recommend first borrowing this one from the library to see if it's to your liking. Only 2 stars because I truly expect Vogue to be top-notch, and it's my opinion that they fell far short on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some Very Nice Color Stitch Patterns, February 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume Three: Color Knitting: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary from the Editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine (Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series) (Hardcover)
This book contains some very nice color stitch patterns. It has lovely photographs and I loved looking at the book. However, it is far from the ultimate stitch dictionary of color. There are so many variations of color and stitches that are not in this book so do not be fooled into thinking that this is 'it'.

Those of you wanting to see more color patterns should check out the following:

1. 1000 Great Knitting Motifs by Luise Roberts

2) Kaffe Fassett's Pattern Library

3) The Essential Guide to Color Knitting Techniques by Margaret Radcliffe

4) The Knitting Experience; Book 3: Color by Sally Melville

5) Knitting Color by Brandon Mably

So, there it is. While Stitchionary 3 is a nice photo book of some lovely color stitches, it is NOT the ultimate stitch dictionary that Vogue claims it to be.

Volume three of the Vogue series is just as great as the first two. Clear, well written instructions make these books a must have to any knitters book collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't own it YET, but..., November 9, 2006
This review is from: The Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume Three: Color Knitting: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary from the Editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine (Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series) (Hardcover)
I LOVE this book! I thumbed through it at the bookstore and it is FANTASTIC! It is my favorite Stitchionary book! I can't wait til I get my paws on it. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's in full color. I prefer black and white, but that's only a personal preference. i'm sure many of you will be pleased to see it in all color. One thing for certain, also that I will have to do is to copy the designs once I own it, because this book is big, as are the rest of the Stitchionaries and it's just too much to carry around at once. There are MANY patterns in here that I LOVE, so it will be hard to choose the first to knit.
