Beautiful but...,

This review is from: The Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume Two: Cables: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary from the Editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine (Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series) (Hardcover)
beautiful book, the swatches look good enough to eat. just one problem [ with this volume and the other two in the series]: NO INDEX!!!! not even a list of the patterns by name. just very broad chapter headings. if the publishers had added a dozen pages to the front of the books, with thumbnails of the swatches, life would be so much easier. After I've drooled over it thoroughly once, I might just want to go right to that cable that looked like little ripples, but not want to have to go through every page to find it.[oh, and they seem to have forgotten the swatch for #186: Sleeping Beauty: my book has a large blank spot on the page].

Vogue did a little better than vol 1, this book does have charts. The book is well organized. I also like that each chart or pattern having abbreviations, has the instructions for those stitch abbreviations on the same page as the swatch. (Unlike Knitters Magazine and their books which generally have these at the back of the book in the glossary section.)
All three volumes in this series could be improved with the addition of a index with thumbnail pictures. Overall, I'm happy with this as a reference.

Beautiful but not as thorough as Barbara Walker,
This review is from: The Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume Two: Cables: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary from the Editors of Vogue Knitting Magazine (Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Series) (Hardcover)
The series of Vogue Stitch Libraries are by no means intended to be as complete as Barbara Walkers or probably even the ORIGINAL Harmony guides. However, their production values are SOOOOOOO much better that I find myself going to these in order to get a better view and more inspiration than the Walker or Harmony guides. If you can only afford one set of stitch dictionaries, these probably wouldn't be it. However, if you are a stitch pattern junky like me, these are definitely a good set to add to your collection.

I know this series inspires strong reactions in people; definitely a "love it" or "hate it" kind of thing. My expectations for Volume Two: Cables was realistic, I think. I've had Vogue Knitting forever, and enjoy the swatches and clear photos, but I know not to expect finesse or depth. This volume has lots of easy-but-cool stitch patterns, and that's about it. I agree with other reviewers that the lack of a real index with thumbnails of each stitch is a real handicap. I shouldn't have to employ tons of labeled post-its to find my favorite stitches.
The charts, unfortunately, are gray-on-gray affairs that could be a lot bigger. There is plenty of room on the oversized pages to allow for many of the charts to have been at least 50% bigger than they are. However, the photos themselves are generously-sized and very clear. Great eye-candy and a very attractive selection of cables. The price here at Amazon is so good that I bought it despite the limitations. PUBLISHERS: If you ever check out the reviews here on Amazon (and you should), you'll find a huge chorus of needlecrafters begging for SPIRAL-BOUND versions of your books. If I'm teetering on the edge of deciding whether to lay down another $20-$40 on a knitting book, a spiral or turtle-binding will seal the deal.

I love the fact that this book has both written pattern and chart. I am not much of a chart person but to have the option is great, now I do not have to write it out.

Even though you have several collections of cable patterns, this volume is well worth the price. It has cable patterns that I have found no where else. I'll use it a lot.

I've been wanting this book and Volume One in the series also, and decided to order them both. They are both excellent! I had them delivered to work and now I'm jonesing to just go home and KNIT KNIT KNIT! What I love about this book is that there's no "learn to knit" section to waste pages on...just a short forward and then on to the stitch patterns! Love love love this book!

Even if I never get good enough to do half the things in the book, I love flipping through looking at the pictures. It's like a recipe book for knitting with all these fantastic ingredients listed that you can combine any way you want.

Vogue continues along the great tradition of providing the information one needs, and desires. Each picture is very well photographed, and detailed. The stitches show up very clearly enabling the reader to see what she wants. The stitch discription is very clear with all the information one would need to accomplish the stitch he or she wants. Wonderful presentation, awesome instructions, a book to add to any knitters library!

I love this set of books because they are so pretty. Even though the number of stitch patterns they have in them is unimpressive, the swatches make them so much prettier to look at and be an inspiration.
