"Beauty's Where You Find It...",
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vogue (Audio CD)
In the spring of 1990, Madonna kicked off the decade in a fashionable way with the club anthem "Vogue," which is one of her signature and most recognizable hits. Shep Pettibone's production gives it an infectious house-ed up vibe, and it's armed with one of the most memorable basslines I've heard in any dance single. As a tribute to trendsetting Hollywood legends, the single did cause some controversy among groups who pointed out that it ignored the Black actresses whose style and glamour inspired the "voguing" that's now known as a dance. It's a valid point, but there's still no denying the rush of energy that this single delivers. Even after all these years, "Vogue" still remains in vogue. A definite classic.

Here's a review of the actual CD! Not Madonna,

This review is from: Vogue (Audio CD)
Yes, yes, Madonna is fantastic, and "Vogue" is fantastic...but how's about someone review the actual recording? Oh, here's one! OK, the original album version is NOT on here, and the BEST version is NOT on here either (the best being the version that appears in the Immaculate Collection). The first track is basically an edit, the other three are extended versions/mixes. They all pretty much sound the same....it is not remixed differently. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this song, but this maxi-single could have been MUCH better, especially with a song like THIS!!

Vogue(n)-1. The current custom 2. In style. DAMM RIGHT! Vogue hits you like a truck. There has never been a dance song better mixed and sung, with the possible exceptions of Ray of Light. It has the everlasting quality, you can put it in your CD player for several hours and still want to listen to it one more time! This song will work your way under your skin and possibly surface as your favorite Madonna song ever! (It did for me.) If you don't like Madonna you will after you hear this!!! So don't just stand there lets get to it. Strike a pose there's nothing to it. Vogue, vogue, vogue, vogue....

One of her greatest.,

When you first listen to Vogue you don't really understand It, It just sounds like a narrative on how style and fashion practically rule the world and you can't really identify any real tune. But once you listen to It a few more times, you realize that never before have voice and simply the beat of a tune been put together so seamlessly. Although you should note that this song Is even more enjoyable when with the music video, proving Madonna can master many art forms.

Strike A Pose For The Queen Of Pop!,
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vogue (Audio CD)
After the successful run of hit singles from her 1989 smash hit No.1 album Like A Prayer, Madonna returned yet again to her throne in 1990, when she released the now-classic anthem Vogue. Madonna wanted to celebrate the new decade in style, and she definitely did with this masterpiece pop/dance hit that surely ranks as one of her best ever songs. Vogue was released in the UK in April 1990 and stormed straight to No.1 for 4 weeks, spending 14 weeks on the chart where it sold more than 500,000 copies and became Madonna's second biggest hit to date - behind Into The Groove. On a worldwide scale, Vogue is easily Madonna's biggest hit. The song topped the US chart, and many others worldwide, shifting 6 million copies.
Vogue opens with the fantastic chord of a string arrangement, which soon kicks in with a fantastic beat that sounds very mellow and subdued. Someone also clicks their fingers in the background to the beat every 1 second - this process lasts until the very end of the song. After 16 clicks, Madonna sings "Strike a pose!" as the beat really kicks in and she chants "Vogue...vogue...vogue." The song them begins after a minute with the fantastic first verse. Madonna sings, "Look around, everywhere you turn it's heartache, it's everywhere that you go! You try, everything you can to escape, the pain of life that you know. If all else fails and you long to be something better than you are today, I know a place where you can get away. It's called a dancefloor! And here's what it's for, so." The joyous first verse then kicks in with "Come on, vogue. Let your body move to the music. Hey, hey, hey. Come on, vogue. Let your body go with the flow, you know you can do it." Madonna then goes on to sing a second verse and a second chorus, before beginning her third verse with the lyrics, "Beauty's where you find it, not just where you bump and grind it. Soul is the musical, that's why I feel so beautiful, magical, life's so full, so get up on the dancefloor!" And then she repeats the chorus again! The best part of the song comes next - the rap! Madonna pays homage to her childhood icons with the lyrics, "Greta Garbo and Monroe, Dietrich and DiMaggio, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean, on the cover of a magazine. Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean, picture of a beauty queen. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, dance on air. They had style, they had grace. Rita Hayworth gave good face, Lauren, Katherine, Lana too, Bette Davis we love you. Ladies with an attitude, fellows that were in the mood. Don't just stand there, let's get to it, strike a pose, there's nothing to it! Vogue!" I remember hearing this rap for the first time about five years ago and being totally mesmerised. Madonna them repeats the chorus a few more times before the song takes four huge strikes and Madonna booms, "Vogue!" which echoes around the song and closes abruptly. The video to Vogue is one of Madonna's best ever music videos. It begins with a view of two huge feathers, that open to give a look of a dark room. The beat is subdued at this point, so the imagery is soft and slow. We have pictures of naked ladies all over the place, men walking around quietly, women picking clothes up off the floor before the camera moves up Madonna's back. She then spins around with her hands in a 'vogue' position. The song then kicks off, as she effortlessly works her way through the song, getting what she wants, being pampered by her servants and dancing like a total loony with some guy! Madonna vogues in the video - a dance that started an international craze, where everyone got up out of their seats to vogue. Many tried, but failed. After all, no one can quite do it as good as Madonna. The video is fantastic in its black and white formula, and was voted No.8 in VH1 UK's 100 Greatest Videos Ever Poll. All in all, a mammoth song from Madonna which deserves its success and has a stunning video to accompany it.

Over the course of her almost 20 year career, Madonna has had many many good moments, this being one of them. Vogue is just simply one of the greatest dance anthems there is, Ive never heard a song put together quite like this one. Its amazing, the melody and lyrics will stay in your head and have you singing along. The video for this song was also amazing as well. The remixes are great for this single, it is a must have for any fans.

"Vogue", of course, is one of Madonna's greatest hits. This CD features four remixes of that song. The single version is almost the same as the album version, but 30 seconds shorter. The 12" version is a great extended eight minute version. The two dub versions aren't all that interesting. They are both seven minute versions with most of the lyrics removed.
