Book Description

October 1, 2011

Since its first cover on December 17, 1892, Vogue has had people talking. Vogue: The Covers chronicles the extraordinary images that have reflected—and transformed—the world of style for more than 120 years. More than 300 of the most beautiful, provocative, and fashion-forward covers ever produced are highlighted alongside the history and stories behind the covers themselves. Organized in chronological order by decade, Vogue: The Covers begins with the illustrated covers from the magazine’s inception in 1892 and spans the 20th century to the present day, charting the evolution of fashion, art, culture, and photography for the past 120 years. Featuring the work of influential artists—Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Annie Leibovitz, and Mario Testino—the book is a stunning celebration of the magazine and its unparalleled influence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous! September 23, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a budding fan of classic illustration and got this book primarily to see the development of this art through the year in magazine art. This book contains such gorgeous work by George Wolfe Plank, Eduardo Garcia Benito, Georges LePape, Carl Erickson, etc that I was almost tempted to get a second copy to post selected pictures near my desk at home. Thankfully, this book comes with a small selection of cardboard inserts to serve this purpose. If you're a fan of the Vogue classic American covers, illustration, fashion and art, this is a must own.

4.0 out of 5 stars From fashion to the faces January 20, 2012
Format:Hardcover
With this large coffee table book we see fashion developing during the last 120 years and also the faces of beauty. The book is mostly in chronological order, although at points it jumps around from year to year, which makes no sense and is a bit irritating if you are trying to see a smooth evolvement of style. Especially when a 1927 cover is inserted in the earlier 20's when fashions were much different.
5 poster boards, the approximate size of the book (12"x9") are inserted in the book and there is an index. Each cover has the person responsible for it and sometimes the name of the face on the cover shot. A forward and an introduction sum up the influences of Vogue. Sections are divided by decade, with a bit of text to tell what it was about. Some of the covers are very small, others full page

This is a history of fashion and style, that "held a mirror up to their times". We see covers progress from drawings to clothes and artistic flair to the faces of the beautiful and glamorous. Those who are fans of art, magazines, especially of Vogue, the visual arts or fashion would enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent. January 9, 2012
By OJP
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book as a gift for my friend and she absolutely loved it. I myself also checked this book out and I found nothing to complain about - so much wonderful information about history of these covers and so many beautiful pictures. The extra pictures for framing were great, quality was really good. I recommend this for everyone who enjoys reading about fashion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as expected
The best photo is the cover photo. I was expecting to see 8x10's throughout, but that isn't the case. Lot's of smaller photos and some 8 bys. All in all, a nice book.

Great cover story for Vogue. I enjoyed the older covers more, the typography is interesting and creative. The additional individual covers for framing are really neat.
