ELIS REGINA: "O FURACÃO" (THE HURRICANE) SINGING IN PORTUGUESE, ENGLISH, AND FRENCH., November 22, 2009
This review is from: Voice of Brazil (Audio CD)
Five BIG Stars!! Outstanding Brazilian popular music (MPB) performances! Elis Regina, the late, great Brazilian super-diva, is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest singers. If you have wondered why she is the object of such over-the-top adulation, these performances by the lady affectionally called O Furacão (The Hurricane) should answer all questions and open the door for you to her extensive discography of excellent CDs and DVDs, of which I own 20 recordings. This '2 on 1 CD' collection has all tracks from the fabulous
In London sessions and the fiery Brazilian sessions called
Elis, Como & Porque (How and Because) from her mid-career period and it is a real bargain. Elis sings in Portuguese, English, and French and she's a musical dervish, serving up winner after winner, especially the definitive version of Milton Nascimento's popular song about "Vera Cruz" and Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte" (Vault). And for those who own similar songs from the
Aquarela Do Brasil (Watercolors of Brazil) Stockholm Sweden "snowstorm" sessions with Toots Thielemans on guitar and harmonica (which got a rare "6 Star" rating), these are differently-nuanced versions, especially the high-energy London sessions featuring Peter Knight's cosmopolitan big band arrangements and soloists. Please click the hyperlinks for my reviews of each separate CD. Over 25 years after her accidental death at age 36, Brazil and her international fans are still in mourning, but encouraged by the meteoric rise of her multiple Latin Grammy-winning daughter, Maria Rita, and her talented sons. The sound samples here are excellent. Superb performances. My Highest Recommendation. Five HUGE Stars! (Audio CD; 23 songs; total time-62:23)
(Comment: bear in mind this is only an overview of a great singer's career: you won't find O Bêbado E a Equilibrista, Atras Da Porta, Arrastão, O Trem Azul, Canção do Sal, or the "Elis & Tom" CD songs, but what we have here is an excellent snapshot of the artist at the height of her artistry in some excellent performances.)

Elis, singer of the world, May 18, 2011
This review is from: Voice of Brazil (Audio CD)
Elis is not just a great brazilian singer. She is one of the best world singers ever. Her career was very short, died of an overdosis at 42, but she has a great sort of recordings that demonstrates all her greatness and evolution of style. Her accurate interpretations are present at any recording. This one in special concerns her initial yaras and is full of quality. This CD contemplates two CDs in one, recorded in the end of the sixties, but shows her great quality as an interpreter. The ones who already know her work, certainly will enjoy this set. The ones who still are not acquainted, should not waste more time. Get introduced to her and will not regret!
