3.0 out of 5 stars Skip it and just buy "You're The Voice" October 14, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Voice in the Dark is a 3-song single released to promote Blind Guardian's 2010 album At the Edge of Time. I'm a huge Blind Guardian fan, and for the most part I've really enjoyed the singles they release to build interest in their full-length albums. This one is a bit of a disappointment though. It's essentially the same as Fly (two album tracks and an exclusive cover), but runs almost twice the price. What gives?

The first two tracks on this single are on the full-length album, so Voice in the Dark's selling point is the non-album track, a cover of the John Farnham (yeah, I had to look him up too) song "You're the Voice." It's a poppy, synth-driven song, but Blind Guardian makes it work. They always do.

It pains me to say this, but there's just not much use for this single now that At the Edge of Time is out. As much as I'd prefer a physical copy, you can buy "You're the Voice" separately as a (legal) download, and for the price that's a much better option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful as usual July 27, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I wish there were more tracks on this. It's a little pricey for just 3 songs, but they are good. As usual with Blind Guardian singles, we have some tracks that won't be on the upcoming album. First we have the lead single, which seems to go in the direction of Night at the Opera more than A Twist in the Myth. Less modern, more thrashy with those famous choruses.

Then, a cover of the song You're the Voice. I'm not in love with it, but the chorus is catchy and I find myself singing along.

Next, is an acoustic version of a song that will be on the album, which is just Hansi and a piano if the sample I heard is reprentative of the whole song. This version is exactly what one expects of "the bards" and makes you picture elves or knights sitting around a campfire while a bard sings and plays. Excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guardian plays it safe, but this is a great song! August 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Back when A Night at the Opera was being released, BG chose their longest, most epic and progressive masterpiece, the finale of the album to be the single. No one does that! And it was AWESOME. This time, they chose their most accessible thrashy song to appease old fans and new alike. More calculated and commercial, but also less exciting and risky. After having the entire album for a week now, I'd probably have used Sacred Worlds as the single if it was up to me.

A Voice in the Dark is a great song featuring an awesome chorus with an insanely epic feel. The track is pretty bare bones though and not what I am used to hearing from Blind Guardian post the year 2000. The song itself sounds like it belongs on one of their 1st 3 albums. It is missing that depth and texture of counterpoint melodies that makes their music immune to growing tired of. The musical arrangement and vocal phrasing is great though and is still a welcome entry into their catalog. The weakest part of the song is the guitar solo which is short and not what Andre normally gives us. I was nervous at first thinking their entire album would sound this bare. An entire album full of songs that sound the same would indeed be boring, but from what I have heard at least, the full album will range from high orchestrated bombastic arrangements to speed thrash and not forgetting the classic Blind Guardian ballads. So my final analysis is that as a straight single, this song isn't really worth shelling out $10 for, but as a track on the entire album among diverse amazing tracks, it is an excellent entry. I would recommend just buying the full album, or if you are very desperate, download the mp3's of the single.

You're the Voice.. I listened to it once, not really my cup of tea so to speak, but not bad.
