Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

"This is a well-crafted and keenly focused overview of Saint Hildegard's life and thought. The contributors adhere to the highest standards of scholarship, write with engagement and clarity, offer new insights, provide a good sense of earlier interpretations, and furnish both provocative insights and excellent clues for further exploration into the subject. This truly is a superior work."—Grover Zinn, Oberlin College

You can trust Ms. Newman and her efforts to present Hildegard. I've found that most scholars trip over themselves in an effort to not sound too "religious" when researching and writing about people held out to be holy. All this does it betray the research subject but not Ms. Newman. She is able to illuminate (pun intended) Hildegard in the context of her historical period as an intelligent, purposive and beautiful person. No one I've read speaks to me more solidly and soulfully than Ms. Newman.

A voice of the 11th century with a lot to tell us and our lives today. For all spiritually inclined people, it can make a difference in your life and also in how we see Religious Institutions.
