Covers the latest protocols and standards from the IETF Your Complete Guide to Network Convergence and Internet Telephony In the last few years, engineers have refined technologies that allow you to transmit multimedia information — voice, fax, video — over the same Internet Protocol (IP) network you use for data. This comprehensive guide delivers a lucid overview of today's Voice over IP technologies — and helps you analyze whether a multimedia IP solution makes sense for your organization. Packed with illuminating case studies, clear explanations of VoIP standards and topologies, and practical advice on applications and implementation, Voice over IP is all you need to get a handle on network convergence, whether you're a network engineer, a telecommunications professional, or an operations manager. CD-ROM includes:
  • Key Request for Comment (RFC) documents
  • eRing Solutions' Voice over IP client software information
  • MessageClick's Fax over IP client software information
  • Westbay Engineers' traffic analysis software
Inside, you'll find everything you need to
  • Understand how Voice over IP compares to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)
  • Find out about VPN and international telephony, voice-enabled e-commerce, desktop video conferencing, Fax over IP, and other multimedia IP applications
  • Perform a Voice over IP cost-benefit analysis for your organization
  • Discover how VoIP protocols — Multicast IP, RTP, RTCP, RSVP, and RTSP — fit together with other protocols in an IP network
  • Evaluate Wan transport alternatives for VoIP, from T1/T3 and ISDN to frame delay and ATM networks
  • Learn how H.323 and other multimedia standards enable VoIP Gateways, terminals, and client software to process calls
  • Get up to speed on implementation issues: interoperability frameworks, H.323 alternatives, APIs, and more
  • Deal with packet loss, packet delay, packet jitter, signal echo, and other quality of service issues

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for a Beginner, March 25, 2000

This review is from: Voice Over IP: Strategies for the Converged Network (with CD-ROM) (Paperback)
Bought the book to get in the ballpark on VoIP ( knew it was phone calls over the internet but not much more). Now I've got a lot better picture of how the VoIP forest is layed out. Terms like H.323, codec, Gatekeeper, RTP, and RTCP are no longer Greek to me.

Chapters 1&3 more management oriented (I'm a developer): market trends and costs/benefits of VoIP. "WebLine" VoIP example way too complex (detailed) for the 3rd chapter. But rest of book (Ch. 4-7) was GREAT! Clear, well organized overview of the VoIP building blocks and how they work together. Also, tons of tips on where to go for more info!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction, January 8, 2001
This review is from: Voice Over IP: Strategies for the Converged Network (with CD-ROM) (Paperback)
This book provides an easily readable introduction to Voice over IP. It assumes little prior knowledge of the reader on the subject, and provides a particularly good introduction to the Internet Protocol, before launching into the specific details of transporting voice over IP.

A broad range of subject matter is covered, although the sections on implementation and Quality of Service are a little weak. Nevertheless, many sources of further research are offered.

Written in a clear and unassuming style, we recommend this book highly.
