Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

What if Iggy Pop had passed over the legendary Stooges to fashion a raucous rock band raised on the sounds of the Mississippi Delta? That band might have been a precursor of the Soledad Brothers--primeval blues-rock intentions, bourbon-soaked vocals and an aggressively charged resonance that begs the listener to turn it up. Also hailing from Pop’s Detroit rock city, where their first single was produced by White Stripes’ frontman Jack White, the trio’s major label debut (a more subtle and streamlined effort than 2002’s Steal Your Soul and Dare Your Spirit to Move) is a back-alley romp of guitars, drums and sax—with occasional organ and harmonica. From the opening guttural chords of "Cage That Tiger" ("I want a purr/All I get is a growl"), they ape Let It Bleed-era Rolling Stones, riff off Sonny Boy Williamson and patriotically salute the fuzzy, old school garage barrage of the American Del-Vettes (see Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968) and British Creation. --Scott Holter

Product Description

The Soledad Brothers have a history that is inextricably linked to their Detroit cohorts The White Stripes, and the Soledad sound is about what you'd expect from a band that began recording in Jack White's living room. Borrowing liberally from the Stones and the Velvets - as well as most of the requisite blues icons - Voice of Treason is an engaging roadhouse stomp that makes for a mean soundtrack to either a night of excess or a night out on the open road. Frontman Johnny Walker puts a likeable strut into his singing, and he has enough charisma to be convincing even when the music isn't doing much to support him. The album gets off to an inauspicious start with three by-the-book barroom rockers that, while enjoyable, could be the work of a thousand other bands. Smash. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real deal...., February 7, 2005
By
This review is from: Voice of Treason (Audio CD)

The Soledad Brothers have been around for ten years, and they may one of the last Detroit bands from the scene that spawn The White Stripes and The Von Bondies. They have released many albums but nothing that expresses their rage and glory. Voice of treason may that record that catapults them into the forebrain of the collective imagination. They are dedicated to the blues. "Cage That Tiger" is a sign of good things to come. Some bands think that they are playing the blues, but listen to things like "Son of Dogs" and you know that this band is the rightful heir to John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat. I look forward to checking these guys out live for real. They seem like a band that should break out. The blues live on in this music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soledad justs keeps getting better!, November 10, 2003
This review is from: Voice of Treason (Audio CD)
Once again, these gentlemen have managed to capture the essence of how modern rock and roll should sound. Rooted of course in blues, Johnnie, Ben and Oliver have expanded their sound to include a more eclectic nature. But, the core of the album still has these 3 men from Ohio rocking and having a lot of fun doing it. I highly recomend this album if you would like to hear a creative, fresh interpertation of the blues and the horde of rock artists to spawn from its influence.

These guys are great. They played my town and I went out and bought the CD right after I saw them live. Really wild and thoughtful rock songs with some serious cool Blues. Really enjoying this one.
