More About the Author

Doreen Lenz Holte is a professional writer and author who was inspired to write "Voice Unearthed: Hope, Help, and a Wake-Up Call for the Parents of Children Who Stutter" after experiencing years of unsuccessful therapy for her own son. Her original intention was to write a book that would help parents (including herself)navigate through treatment options and become more effective advocates for their children.

The book intention changed after Holte's research revealed an alarming degree of uncertainty, discord, and lack of evidence behind the current approach promoted by universities and sanctioned by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. "Voice Unearthed" helps readers understand the evolution of an approach that focuses on using speech techniques to manage stuttering behavior in children and why it has been so widely embraced in the face of dismal outcomes. Both Holte and her son, Eli, share parts of their own journey to help readers understand the harm that can be done and the toll the approach can take on a child's ability and willingness to communicate.

Doreen has clearly laid out the issues of what is wrong with the current treatment for stutterers. Her book integrates her own child's experience along with the scientific evidence to make a strong case for re-examining how we think about stuttering. This book is a compelling read and will change what you do with the child who stutters.

This is coming from a parent of a child who had fluency issues. I would recommend Voice Unearthed to anyone looking for an alternative to the standard recipe treatment that is used most everywhere for children who stutter. This book provides the first step to changing the status quo of stuttering therapies. The author and her son are open and honest about their struggles with speech therapy and their journey. Our children are the future, please give them every opportunity to speak their mind!

LOVED LOVED LOVED this book by Doreen Lenz Holte! In fact, I could barely put the book down. I've been an SLP in the public school system since 1990, and for the first 15 years of my career I tried hard to teach students the strategies that I was taught at the university. I don't think I've ever been able to help a student using fluency-enhancing or stuttering-modification therapy. (Some young students did experience spontaneous recovery, despite the therapy they were subjected to). About 5 years ago, I stopped using those strategies and worked more on just being an advocate and safe place for my students to talk. Like Doreen, I too felt that we SLPs were causing our students to stutter more severely. It was tremendously validating to hear the same beliefs from a parent of a child who stutters, and a person who had also researched fluency therapy.

It is a must for any parent of a stuttering child... My only regret is that I haven't read this 2 months before, now it feels too late...although it shouldn't be...Highly recommended book! A wonderful lecture with many good points and thoughts and an incredible sincerity. All to learn from. Yes, keep them talking and keep it fun! Thank you Dori and Eli for sharing this to us. You are not alone and we are not alone either, wherever we live.

Update, nov.2013.
Our son is so much better mainly due to Sandra Merlo's (brazilian speech therapist) article on SLEEP
Parents, read this and apply, it will work:

We had just taken our son for a speech therapy assessment and the therapists sat me down to talk to me about my son's stuttering and sounds. One told me his issues were genetic and the incorrect pronunciations stem from the parents. Sitting there, I suddenly felt "under the microscope". It was as if I was now unable to speak because I was being analyzed...my speech, my fluency, my language. It felt paralyzing. Though I was commended for my excellent speaking abilities both professionally and personally, I sat there stuttering, messing up words. At that moment, it occurred to me that this was how my son would be made to feel in speech. I sought out a support group thinking perhaps I'd be doing him a dis-service by not pursuing help. When I found one, it was truly the luckiest find! Dori lead me to her book! I feel that it saved my son from speech therapy and from the added anxiety of it and from increased speech challenges as a result!
