Book Description

March 1994
Emerson shares with readers the isolation, fear, and shame that an incest victim feels. For all women who have been abused--sexually, emotionally, verbally, or spiritually--In the Voice of a Child demonstrates how to reach a new level of self-awareness and acceptance of themselves as God-gifted, fully sexual beings without shame.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The memory recounted in the excerpt of chapter one lays the foundation to describe a typical dysfunctional family system, which unwittingly maintains the shame and secrecy around sexual abuse. Most important about that memory is the illustration that before the first occurrence of sexual abuse, I had already learned that I would not be believed, and so was blocked from seeking help for later violations. My mothers own pain from her earlier emotional wounds distracted her from giving the attention her children needed to maintain their safety. Incest never occurs in a healthy family system. And it is the system itself, not just the isolated incidences of abuse, which must be changed for healing to occur. Readers have found my story a sometimes disturbing, but ultimately hopeful and inspiring view of healing from abuse.

From the Back Cover

Victims of incest all feel as if theyre the only ones. But we have so much in common. If only we could all find each other and know that its safe to talk about the pain, the confusion, the loneliness.

If you have been sexually abused or are close to someone who has been sexually abused, you need to know that you are not alone and that there is hope for lasting healing. In the Voice of a Child takes you into the experiences of a survivor of sexual abuse and helps you see how one woman discovered freedom and wholeness.

Judy Emersons journal begins with thoughts and feelings stemming from the first sessions of therapy as an adult. Gently and sensitively, her memories of past abuse are explored. She shows how her abusive history created shame and confused expectations that colored all her adult relationships and how the therapy process helped Judy come to terms with her past and with her faith.

Beautifully written, In the Voice of a Child speaks directly to the survivor of abuse. The author says, Sexual abuse creates a festering wound that cannot heal in the atmosphere of shame and family secrecy that controls incest victims. Speaking the secret and opening that painful wound is the only way to release its poison.

This moving, personal journal is a chronicle of healing and hope for victims of sexual abuse. If you or someone you know struggles with past abuse, In the Voice of a Child offers a liberating view of one persons healing process.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Healing Experience, August 15, 2004
This review is from: In the Voice of a Child/One Woman's Journey to Healing from Sexual Abuse (Paperback)
Reading and rereading Judy Emerson's book is a healing experience. Her courage in sharing her story inspires me to face my own pain and shame and do whatever it takes to heal and grow. She helps me see myself in a more empathetic way. This book gives me hope. Of all the books I've read on sexual abuse, this is the one I would most highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Painful Past Made Public - With A Good Ending, June 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: In the Voice of a Child/One Woman's Journey to Healing from Sexual Abuse (Paperback)
The author (Judy) has already provided enough information that a review is almost unnecessary. I myself have never suffered from sexual abuse. I would have an interest in the book because I knew the author as a teenager. Only many years later would I learn what was happening during the time I knew her.

It is a mystery to me why some people will seek answers to their suffering, while others will go to their grave never looking - always suppressing it in a multitude of self destructive ways. Judy is one such person who would look for answers. This is not a self-help book. However, reading Judy's journey could lead others to look for meaningful answers for this type of childhood trauma. One thing not fully expressed by the author's own review is the spiritual side of Judy's nature, which is expressed throughout the book.

Don`t let the out-of-print status deter you. All but the most rare book can be found on Amazon's used book network.
