Book Description

February 15, 1992
This audio CD with 10 page booklet, presents a stereophonic journey through a cloud forest day in Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Step onto the trails in the pre-dawn to a chorus of crickets, tink frogs, and Mottled Owl. Experience the amazing roars of a troop of howler monkeys as they announce the day from the canopy. Have a seat at the perfect spot on a trail for the beginning of the dawn chorus. Hear Resplendent Quetzal, Emerald Toucanets, and the yodeling of Prong-billed Barbets. Absorb the ethereal calls of Black-faced Solitaire and Slaty-backed Nightingale- Thrush, the mellifluous whistling of Black-thighed Grosbeak and raucous duets of Black-breasted Wood-Quail. Walk to the edge of the windswept Continental Divide where the calls of Three-wattled Bellbird, and Gray-breasted Wood-Wren reverberate across the valley below. Feel Arenal Volcano shake from the distance, and return through an evening chorus at sunset, as frogs, nightbirds and Kinkajous take the stage. The production runs for 33 minutes of uninterrupted stereo, and then is repeated with the addition of a narrative which describes the sounds through the trip. AUTHOR COMMENTS: This CD features the sounds of the cloud forest as the listener would encounter them on a walk along the trails of Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. It is the product of years of sound recording expeditions in Costa Rica. The index and track numbers allow the sounds to be played randomly. The accompanying booklet also includes information on the natural history of the cloud forest, and organizations working to protect it. The sounds are identified to species with both English and scientific names. This CD has found a niche with avid naturalists-scientists, as well as within the grade school classroom.

Spent a few days in Costa Rica's Los Angeles Cloud Forest (just North of San Ramon) regretting that I didn't have something to record all the incredible sounds--and violà--here is this CD. Great for learning to identify calls & sounds. If you're really interested, I highly recommend "A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica" (ISBN: 0-8014-9600-4) to see what these birds look like. I guarantee 1 of 2 things: if you learn to identify the sounds on this CD before your trip to a cloud forest, you'll be the "expert," and if you don't, you'll will repeat these words over and over: "What on earth was that?

This review is from: Voices of the Cloud Forest (Audio CD)
Its been years since my last trip to Costa Rica and Monteverde's Cloud Forest but this CD puts me back in an instant. It is laid out just as you would experience it. No bogus critters from other continents, just the splendor of sounds you fid there. There is more information about this title at sites like tinkfrog.com, or a web search on the title for availability.
