This review is from: Voices of the Faithful: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Serving Around the World (Hardcover)
This is a collection of short essays written by western Christian missionaries who are located throughout the world.

Beth Moore compiles this set of short inspirational readings (one for every day). Each reading is one page. The objective is that you read the short essay, all of which are based on Bible verses, and contemplate the teaching throughout the day.

The essays are arranged by subject. Each month has a different theme. February - the word of God. March - prayer. Etc. Each month's essays are preceded by comments by Beth Moore.

Some of the essays are very inspiring. It takes a couple of minutes to do the daily reading, but one can contemplate it during your daily commute or throughout the entire day. Some of these messages are that good.

However, Beth Moore's comments are my favorite part. She uses charm, wit and wisdom to arrive at a very entertaining writing style, and at the same time she is very effective at getting her point across, and her monthly introductions are perfect for setting up the theme for the coming month. But her short introductions are only to set the stage for the real stars of the book, the missionaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contrary to the Poisonwood Bible, February 26, 2006
This review is from: Voices of the Faithful: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Serving Around the World (Hardcover)
Missionaries are faced with many uncertainties when entering the field. Reading the day-to-day devotions, the reader gets an very intimate look of how God works in the lives of people who are faced with dangers, sickness, atrocities, and religious persecution. He is truly great and I am blessed to have read this collection.

There is a total of 366 devotions (even one for Feb. 29th!), each being a different story and from all parts of the world. Some stories include (taken from the book jacket)

- A Christian claims the name of God at knifepoint- and lives to tell about it...

- Prayer revives a coma victim, in defiance of village witch doctors

- An abused 7-year old asks, "Do you have any pills that would give me hope?"

- Prayerwalking college students lay a foundation for spritiual revival in West Africa

- A former Muslim finds forgiveness in the Jesus she denied.

A great collection of true-life stories. Missionaries go all over the world to do His work and many come back with amazing stories to tell. You'll be amazed what these people go through, espeically when we worry about the day-to-day. Perhaps this book will even help you to know if you want to be a missionary or not. If you've been entertaining the idea, then this book may help.

If you want to understand what God is doing in the world and in the lives of Christians you should read this devotional . It has some great stories and is written by Missionaries. Beth Moore co authored it but I am sure she would be the first to tell you the stories were writen by the sweat and blood of the missionaries on the field for God. I love this what a great gift for CHRISTmas eternal Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Devotional Book!, December 29, 2010
This devotional book is SO so good! Beth Moore has partnered with hundreds of missionaries to bring daily encouragement to us from all over the world in Voices of the Faithful. Each of the 366 devotions is written by a missionary serving in some capacity for the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention, and they are categorized by a different monthly theme.

Although the devotions are penned by missionaries, Beth Moore is ALL over this book in her characteristic, down-to-earth writing style. In addition to writing the introduction to the entire book, she also introduces the focus for each month and concludes the book with ways to pray for and support international missionaries and people groups. January focuses on God's Character. Other monthly topics include Prayer, Persecution, Contentment and more. I'm sure that you could skip around if you wanted to, in order to focus on a certain topic, instead of reading straight through. However, each devotion is marked with a specific date, if you want to stay on track. Each day also begins with a focus Scripture verse and concludes with a brief prayer.

In her introduction to Voices of the Faithful, Beth states that we are all "called to the world in partnership with missionaries. Likewise, they are called to local missions in partnership with [us]. This is our `partnership in the gospel.' It all begins with awareness that each of us is there, appreciating and praying for the other." This is so true. And what a great way to remember them daily by reading bits of encouragement and insight from them!

I can't wait to incorporate this devotional book into my time with the Lord each day in 2011.

Note: I received this book for free from Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for this honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who cares about world missions, December 14, 2009
This review is from: Voices of the Faithful: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Serving Around the World (Hardcover)
Beth Moore did not write this book and she did not even compile the devotional pieces. However, she does write some good intros and such. This is a compilation of devotional thoughts and experiences, mostly of missionaries around the globe. Hollywood and secular universities try to portray missionaries as hopelessly outdated, misguided Westerners determined to "convert hopeless savages" and obliterate their cultures and cherished customs. Any anthropologist, secular scholar,or screenwriter who still thinks this is true has been hopelessly left behind by the world of reality. Christian missiology has learned all these lessons long ago and is effectively telling millions the good news about Jesus Christ while fully respecting them as individuals along with their customs, culture, and languages. Seasoned linguists devote 30-40 years nowadays to translating spoken languages into written language so that all people can read the wealth of literature available, including the Holy Bible. This book is a great and vivid example of the compassion and deep respect missionaries exhibit toward peoples throughout the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Daily Devotional, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Voices of the Faithful: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Serving Around the World (Hardcover)
I am a member of the Thomas Nelson Book Review program [...] and recently read Voices of the Faithful Book 2: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Around the World, a compilation of stories with Introductions by Kim P. Davis and Beth Moore. This book is a daily devotional book of evangelical stories from Christian Missionaries who have served around the world, from right here in the United States, to Romania, to the Middle East, South America and beyond. The book is formatted by subject and dates. An entire month will be devoted to a particular topic, such as "Be Encouraged," "Prayer the Priority," and "Lost and Found." I found this book to be very easy to navigate. For those who have very little time to read, just a short half-page story on the corresponding day makes a perfect daily devotional.

Each story affected me as a Christian in a different way. Some were inspirational, some were astounding, some made me so thankful for every blessing in my life. Some were a little silly and didn't affect me at all. There was one particular story that I found to be particularly moving called "God Has a Plan." However, I felt that the subject matter of the stories moved me more than the writing itself. The writing alone I found to be a bit immature. I think that in the interest of keeping the stories short they were too simply written. Unfortunately I think that part of the message was lost, and it forced the reader to actively engage in the book rather than the book engaging the reader.

Overall I found this a worthwhile read, but certainly not a page-turner. Which I suppose is the purpose anyways, to be a daily devotional rather than a book read in one or two sittings. I would recommend this book as a daily read.

If you are looking for a devotional book that will broaden your prospective about missionairies; this is the book. Beth Moore has an introduction at the beginning of each month. The daily devotionals are grouped together into topics that change each month.

I started reading the devotions in September. October was on spiritual warfare. I was amazed at the depth of the content. You will be suprised that some of these beliefs still exist. We are so caught up in our own little worlds that we do not have a clue about the world around us. Each day has a scripture to read, a story, and a prayer to use.

The missionaries are identified mostly by initials but you are given the region that the missionary lives in. My Sunday School class is using the devotionals before our lesson on Sundays. We take turns presenting the text that usually works right along with our lesson on that particular Sunday. I have ordered the book for some of my friends and they love it also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voices of the Faithful is a great Devotional., January 5, 2012
I love daily devotionals and this one has turned out to be one of my favorites. Voices of the Faithful book 2 is a collection of inspiring stories from Christian missionaries around the world. It is compiled by Kim P. Davis and Beth Moore is the Series Creator. Kim Davis writes a monthly introduction. Beth Moore has written an introduction in the front of the book.

This book has reminded me and admonished me that there are Christians around the world who are putting their lives on the line for the cause of Christ. Each story is about real people and the very real problems they are having. That includes the missionaries themselves and the people they are sent to serve. Each time I read one of the devotions I am pulled back from the world just a little bit and I remember what my life is supposed to be about. We are all to be missionaries. We don't have to go around the world to show others the love of God.

I was given this book to review by BookSneeze and give my honest opinions and that is what I have done.
