Book Description

November 15, 1999
Voices from the Flood is the story of the people who were forced to evacuate their homes and disperse to shelters and makeshift accommodations for over three weeks in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota. During that time, cities in the valley were virtual ghost towns, with no electricity, running water, sanitation, jobs, or stores. The story of the flood's impact is told in the voices and rhythms of the people themselves. Over 100 people were asked to tell their stories; these interviews were recorded, transcribed, selected and edited to make an oral history record of the disaster.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Nearly three years later, the tales leap off the pages, saturating the senses. You still can smell the buildings that were ravaged by water and fire. You still can feel the gut-wrenching anxiety of a community trying desperately to save its home, its spirit and its past.

In 1997, the Red River of the North flooded its banks and gushed through Grand Forks, N.D., taking away possessions and hope and leaving horrific memories. "Voices from the Flood," an oral history, allows those who lost everything to gracefully revisit that devastating time.

While occasional black-and-white photographs of the flood scenes and storytellers illustrate the tales, this book offers a very different view of the flood than does its companion book, "Under the Whelming Tide," published last year. That book depicted the flood and its effect through photographs that captured as much emotion as they did history. The North Dakota Museum of Art was the driving force behind the publishing of both books. -- Minneapolis Star Tribune, 01/11/00
