Book Description

July 1996 American Heritage Voices from the Front Series
Multi cast. 2 cassettes 3 Hours Original for audio. Voices From The Front, delivers the past as if it were as urgent as today's mail: listeners will experience the major events of The Civil War and World War I, through the simplicity and honesty, the clarity and color, of letters written from this country's sons to loved ones back home. These are not memoirs in hindsight, but the words, the viewpoints and the emotions of soldiers on the line, tinged with both the immediacy of each situation and the uncertainty of its outcome. Each tape in the series traces one battle or subject, reflecting it with added dimension by presenting accounts written by those on opposing forces. Side One begins with a short explamation of the battle's elements and significance, followed by approximately one dozen letters written by soldiers, sailors, or flyers engaged in the day-to-day fighting. Side Two actually turns the story around, with letters from the other side of the battle line. Each tape ends with a conclusion that includes notes on the fates of those whose words were heard. The Lafayette Escadrille & The Battle of Belleau Wood: The Lafayette Escadrille battled Germany's ace-pilots high over the frontlines: two hundred Americans volunteered for it, flying in the airwar and dogfighting the enemy in open planes, long before their country entered the war. Hear World War I exactly the way the pilots and soldiers fought it: on each tape, American voices fill one side, German voices fill the other. In their words, you'll understand the grand strategy-and feel the private anguish-of war. The Battle of Belleau Wood was one of the first battles fought by the Americans and it showed the German troops what the U.S. combat force was made of. In June, 1918, the Marines marched into the ferocious fire of the machine gun infested Wood, and stopped the Germans final advance to Paris.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

This program was produced specifically for audio and istruly better suited to that format because the many readers make the period writings come alive. The program is drawn from the letters and diaries of participants and those affected by the war. The listener learns about the battles, as well as the lives of those participants. Thus, these programs present both military and social history. The cast members sound as if they've been transported from the past; their voices are a perfect match to the readings. The narrator's deep, solemn voice is appropriate for discussing war, and he provides essential information about the background of the conflict, the participants and its long-term consequences of the battles. In addition to the great readings, the program is filled with lively period music. M.L.C. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good WW1 recital from a 1st person viewpoint, December 2, 1999

I bought this tape (on e-bay BTW), for the aerial content, but remember it for the highly evocative depiction of Americans fighting at the Battle of Belleau Wood. This is not trench fighting, per se, but a breakthrough and counterattack. Not at all what I expected, and it was a pleasent surprise. The stuff in the air is less memorable, unfortunately, but you won't go wrong by buying this tape.

What is one to think of a book about a particular group in a particular air force whose cover shows aircraft never flown by that group and belonging to another country? Can't blame the author. Who then?
