I was a friend of Gilda's,
By "goodlooking999" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
As someone who knew and loved (and wrote for) Gilda, I sometimes view tributes that are done in her honor with a consideration of what she would've thought of the gesture. She would've LOVED this CD. For many reasons. First of all, the artists who are represented and gave of themselves as well as their talents would've touched her heart in an indescribable fashion. Gilda was an artist who knew what it was like to create - so these songs that were donated both in her honor and for the wonderful cause that bears her name (Gilda's Club) are indeed the greatest gifts fellow artists could have given her. Secondly, Gilda knew just about everyone represented on this CD personally. She loved Paul Simon's music. No one made her laugh harder than Steve Martin. Paul Shaffer, Billy Crystal, and Victor Garber were among her oldest friends. And she had a crush on Gene Wilder. Last, but hardly least, Gilda loved being the center of attention. And if she is in a place where she somehow knows what all these wonderful people did in her name and honor, I know she's be smiling. This CD is great.

Gilda's totally objective brother's review.,
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
I knew this double CD was coming, but until I had a chance to play it I did not appreciate what a wonderful collection of great songs and music interspersed with terrific humor and laughs it would be. That so many great artists cared about my sister and wanted to remember her by donating their work to help support Gilda's Club, the free social and emotional cancer support community for men, women and children with all types of cancer, their families and friends. Gilda inspired this with her wish that no one have to face cancer alone. This is a very enjoyable double CD with a wide variety music and humor. It would be both great to have and to give as a gift. That you are supporting a good cause at the same time is a bonus. Of course I'm Gilda's brother and that's just my opinion.

A Wonderful Tribute to Survival, Humor and Caring!,
By
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
Gilda Radner was an inspiration to so many, not only in her humor, but in how she faced her cancer. And the Gilda's Club legacy is a fitting tribute to such a talent and enduring spirit. Not only is this simply a fantastic compilation of music and humor -- who can resist bopping to Steve Martin's "King Tut" or singing along with Elton John? But it's also a tribute to Eileen Johnson, who survived thyroid cancer as a teenager, and who sings like an angel on two tracks on this double-CD set. But most people don't know that the entire project was her mother's idea...and her mom spent two years contacting artists and taking what started out as a small local project, and turning it into a national smash hit! And Amazon is donating all the proceeds, except for a small handling fee, to Gilda's Clubs, so this CD set is making even more of a profound impact! Buy it if you love artists like Mandy Patinkin, Harry Connick Jr., Randy Travis, Quincy Jones. Buy it if you love to laugh to the humor of Gilda, Dana Carvey, or Billy Crystal. Buy it if someone you love has cancer. Buy it if you want to honor thyroid patients! What a wonderful legacy for Gilda, and a wonderful tribute for Eileen Johnson! And what a wonderful gift for those of us who can enjoy this compilation...

Good ol' Gilda,
By "taliaschmalia" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
Voices For Gilda is an amazing blend of cherished artists. Beloved classics that we don't want the world to forget are now preserved on this hilarious double CD. The first track, Gilda Radner's stand up comedy act about Columbia University's School of Journalism and their graduation day literally had me laughing so hard I nearly peed my pants. Her thick NY accent and lovable attitude would leave any audience in a state of shaking laughter. Other remarkable tracks include Gene Wilder singing a song he and his wife, (the late Gilda Radner) used to sing together. Emotional, yet witty, this catchy tune sure lingers in your head for a while. Choppin' Broccoli is also hysterically sung by Dana Carvey. Only Mr. Carvey could be blamed for the confused faces that come from hearing this crazy track. Also, perhaps the best tracks of all are performed by a talented young woman by the name of Eileen Johnson. Eileen, like Gilda, faced the long, difficult journey of cancer. Eileen has dreamt of becoming a singer since she was young, but with cancer of the throat, she was told she may never sing again. However, her mother promised her she would, and sure enough, Eileen beat the cancer, and has completely regained her gorgeous voice. On Voices for Gilda, Eileen beautifully belts out A Friend In You, and We've Only Just Begun. So there you have it: Gene Wilder, Eileen Johnson, Dana Carvey, and many, many more devote their songs to Gilda on this amazing CD. Plus, all the benefits go to the most worthy organization on the planet: Gilda's Club Seattle!! (A community for men, women, and children, living with cancer, their families, and friends.)

Gilda Lives On,
By Alyssa (USA) - See all my reviews

As a wannabe SNLer, Gilda has inspired me so much-- not just as a comedian and actress, but as a person. This CD has the right balance of comedy and song, featuring tracks by SNL alums such as Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal and beautiful tracks by Celine Dion and Elton John, to name a few. The most touching track of all has to be "Ohio" sung by Gilda's husband Gene Wilder. The profits of this CD benefit Gilda's Club, which is a beautiful organization. Gilda Radner will live on forever not just through her brilliant comedy, but through this inspiring organization that has helped so many. The world lost an amazing person way too soon.

Proud husband and father,
By A Customer
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
My wife Mary Kay is the inpiration and driving force behind this CD. She has worked effortlessly for two years to see this come to fruition. After our daughter Eileen had thyroid cancer at age 15, her doctors feared she may not be able to sing as a result of her surgery. Mary Kay vowed Eileen would sing again, "with the voice of an angel." After recovering and singing at several cancer fund raisers, my wife realized the power of Eileen's singing and came up with the idea for this CD. She called many music celebrities who have donated their songs for this cause. Every time I listen to these CD's, I remember my wife' effort and our daughter's stuggle to be well and sing again. Of course I'm very prejudiced, but I can't help being a proud husband and father. The CD is for a great cause and helps many struggling with cancer to improve their lives. I recommend this CD for everyone. It's uplifting and funny. We especially love Dana Carvey's Chopping Broccoli song. But of course, my favorites are Eileen's two songs. Enjoy!

a wonderful tribute,
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
a lovely album filled with songs of hope, sadness and joy. A very moving tribute for one of the comedic greats. Having survived skin cancer, I am particularly affected by the powers of music and comedy to restore optimism and the solidarity of humans to take on this monumental challenge. This work preserves her legacy for generations to come. Her genius is eternal.

Songs for life and a cause,
By A Customer
This review is from: Voices for Gilda (Audio CD)
The songs on this compilation capture the spirit of Gildan Radner in many ways. You'll laugh along with her and her comedy friends, you'll be touched by the songs and when it's all over you'll marvel at how once again Gilda has brought another ray of sunshine to your day. My personal favorite is Mandy Patinkin rendition of "Singing in the Bathtub" I challenge anyone to listen to this and not break out in a grin from ear-to-ear at the sheer exuberance communicated by the artist. This is a must buy CD with the added bonus of your purchase supporting an incredible organization that has touched the lives of thousands. It's not too early to be thinking of these for the holidays. Your friends and family will love you for it.

Voices for Gilda is a terrific compliation of some of my favorite artists. The tracks from Gilda are "laugh out loud funny". The CD flows from one great song or skit to another -- Steve Martin's King Tut and Dana Carvey's Chopping Broccoli along with Elton John and Paul Simon are some of the best. And the money goes to support a great organization like Gilda's Club, which helps people living with cancer. I bought a couple CD's as gifts for my family and friends. I can't think of a better cause. I highly recommend it. Enjoy.
