Book Description

0811821250 978-0811821254 November 15, 1998
An unprecedented pro bono effort by Jossey-Bass Publishers and Chronicle Books.

Americans young and old, rich and poor, in cities and in rural areas, from all faiths and races, come together to volunteer.

Voices from the Heart is a tribute to this spirit of giving and the ideal of community. Author Brian O'Connell and editor Rebecca Buffam Taylor present a moving portrait of compassion at work. We meet volunteers from across the country and hear their passionate voices speak about what they do and why. Compelling images by leading photojournalists add to the story of each volunteer's work and its rich rewards.

A nonprofit joint Andeavor by Chronicle Books, Jossey-Bass Publishers, and major national foundations, profits from the sale of Voices from the Heart will go to INDEPENDENT SECTOR, a nonprofit group dedicated to America's volunteer organizations.

Everyone who gives time and effort to help other people or important causes will appreciate this homage to the manifold benefits of volunteering.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"'There's something wonderfully rewarding in being part of an effort that makes a difference,' O'Connell-founding president of Independent Sector, now a professor of public service-declares in his introduction to this collection of commentaries by and photographs of 25 of the nearly 100 million Americans who volunteer. The 25 range in age from 13 to 84 and represent various ethnic groups. Many volunteer by sharing their expertise--in yoga, film and video, computer, math and science, self-defense, farming techniques, or legal research. Other volunteers draw on painful experiences (e.g., with breast cancer or HIV) to teach or counsel others. Hobbies such as dancing, hiking and singing are the basis for some volunteer work, more traditional services (e.g., food, shelter, and medical care) are provided by other volunteers through groups or one on one. The volunteer narratives are direct and involving; many of the photos (by leading photojournalists) are superb. Thanks to major grant funding, the book is inexpensive enough to be appropriate for most libraries." -- Booklist --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Voices from the Heart: In Celebration of America's Volunteers (Paperback)
Brian O'Connell's Voices From The Heart, profiles 25 active volunteers from around the United States. The volunteers range in age and all are working on a variety of projects that help make the world a better place. The new book is perfect for a coffee table or holiday gift. I read many profiles on my way back from San Francisco and I couldn't put the book down.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!, February 20, 2009
I ordered this book January 20 and was told I would receive it no later then February 12. It is February 20 and still no book. Even disappointing, is the lack of communications from the person I purchased the book from. She has never responded to my request to identify why the book was never sent. Bad business Amazon! I need answers from someone.

Amazon you should have an area for zero rating. I had to rate this one star or your system would not print my review. Consider fixing this.
