Most Helpful Customer Reviews

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Carlos Morais José on January 7, 2000
Format: Paperback
This book has the great advantage of giving the reader the direct speech of people who lived the events described, i.e., the rise of the Qing dinasty and the fall of the Ming. In this sense is quite a unique document, with great value for the historian, but also for those who need to understand closely the way of thinking and feeling in a certain historical time. Through the book one can experience the fear and terror of an invasion and the arrival of new masters. But also to admire how the Qing had the ability to preserve and absorve the Han culture. I mainly ordered this book for the memoir in it called the Massacre at Yangzhou. I believe these 17th century texts from China have never been translator into English before, and Lynn Struve is a known specialist in this field. She has done an incredible job. If you're interested in history, Chinese history, traditional China, war accounts, memoir, all these are excellent reasons to get a copy of this book.
