Book Description

October 1984
The classic Dubus novella—now available as an ebook

In the aftermath of two failed marriages, a Catholic family seeks salvation from within

Voices from the Moon opens amidst the fallout of Stowe family patriarch Greg’s divorce from his wife, Joan; and shortly after, that of their eldest son, Larry, from his wife, Brenda. On the verge of adolescence, young Richie Stowe grapples to make sense of these events and their consequences, and seeks solace in the church. As the family attempts to mend itself and move forward, its members are forced to reconcile their feelings of betrayal with their enduring love for one another.

Masterfully related from the alternating perspectives of its six main characters, Dubus’s richly drawn novella recounts a family’s failure to abide by those laws divined and decreed, and its path to redemption via understanding and forgiveness.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Andre Dubus including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

More About the Author

Andre Dubus (1936-1999) is considered one of the greatest American short story writers of the twentieth century. His collections of short fiction, which include Adultery & Other Choices (1977), The Times Are Never So Bad (1983), and The Last Worthless Evening (1986), are notable for their spare prose and illuminative, albeit subtle, insights into the human heart. He is often compared to Anton Chekhov and revered as a "writer's writer."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Man Marries His Son's Ex-Wife, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Voices from the Moon P (Hardcover)
This is a poetic novel, rich with imagery and lyricism.

The story is told primarily from the eyes of a twelve year-old. The novel relates, in a somewhat dreamy and stark fashion, the results of a man's deciding to marry his son's ex-wife.

The novel focuses on family and feelings, on Catholicism and guilt of sin and retribution, on what was, what is, what could or will be as it is intertwined in our inevitable link with others around us.

This is a beautiful novel.
