Book Description

February 2001
A private investigator working for shady magnate J. Nathan Pierce is dead. Spencer Finch, a freelance reporter desperate for meaningful work, leaps at the chance for a big story when his soft profile on Pierce becomes a murder mystery. Unfortunately, Finch has a whodunit with no leads. He also has an apartment with no furniture, and a life with no direction. When he begins to dig a little deeper, though, Spencer suddenly finds himself caught up in a web of intrigue that includes millionaires, mobsters and secret societies, with a priceless ancient book at its center.

Told with a keen wit and an individual flair, Voices of Thunder is the rare mystery novel that successfully rises above the conventions of a single genre, incorporating elements of fantasy, adventure and true crime with a staggering knowledge of literary history. Using a dazzling variety of styles and voices, Roberson’s debut novel moves from Greek tragedy to pulp potboiler effortlessly, weaving a masterful, suspenseful tale with his own unique touch.

The back cover blurb of this book led me to think that this would be either the coolest book ever, or one of the worst. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised. Roberson has created a whole new thing: a supernatural murder mystery. I think that fans of both mysteries and sf/fantasy would like it. Mostly it's just a very interesting story about a freelance journalist who gets caught up in a web of intrigue surrounding a mysterious ancient artifact. The book digresses into faithful reproductions of pulp crime stories, western tales, even a "lost" greek tragedy. I recommend this to anyone who likes mysteries with a little something different thrown in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cross-genre fiction at its best!, August 11, 2001

Roberson's Spencer Finch is everything a detective/reporter should be--wry, hard drinking, battle scarred, and charmingly self-deprecating. He comes from the classic Phillip Marlow mold, but he's somehow more appealing in his foibles.

Perfectly paced, even with its detours into Greek plays, Middle English ballads, pulp crime novels and western legends (all written in the appropriate style), the book is entirely engrossing and utterly different from anything out there.

Clockwork Storybook has produced another very talented writer.
