A thorough and entertaining exposure!,
By Jon Saboe "Author of 'The Days of Peleg' and ... (Baltimore, MD USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
Mr. Parker has created a fun and informative tale (embedded in a juvenile-fiction, high-school romance) in which the main characters are exposed to the pros and cons of the Intelligent Design debate.
All the Voices of the Wind also doubles as a excellent coming-of-age story, in which the main character, Jeremy, must learn whether what he believes is the result of his up-bringing, or if it comes from his own intellectual decisions. One can sense that Mr. Parker's stand-up comedy career has been somewhat suppressed, as humorous repartee sometimes continues a bit longer than needed. However, he gets it all in there, and in the end, he makes compelling and poignant points--and makes them so that his intended teen-age readers will understand and benifit from them. Elements of danger and adolescent angst fill in the story, creating an adventure which anyone can enjoy. A final climax will keep you riveted as a courtroom-like drama unfolds. And no matter which side you are cheering for, you won't be disappointed! This book is thoroughly enjoyable and informative. It does suffer from the lack of a bibliography, since Mr. Parker obviously did a great deal of research. Hopefully, one will be forthcoming in future editions.

This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
Don Parker's amazing novel, Voices, is a compelling story about two teens seeking truth and working together to solve the world's oldest mystery. Mr. Parker takes us on a vivid journey where the dialogue captivates the reader and pushes the story forward. The vivid proof and scriptures he includes in this realistic story will enthrall even the hardest heart on the subject of Creation verses Darwinism. This is a 'Must Read Novel'. I would recommend this novel highly to anyone of any age. The characters shine, the dialogue snaps, and the reader is glued to each page. Outstanding ...

This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
Don Parker definately writes with a a very high seriousness. All The Voices of the Wind will keep you spellbound once you get past the first chapter. Keep an open, non critical mind and you will be delivered into a new realm where you can make a choice. One must wonder if Don was trying to propitate a higher level of a human. All the Voices of the Wind, I would consider, a good investment to read and table in your favorite room for others to see.

This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
All the Voices of the Wind, by author Donald James Parker, is a gem of a book. The author has taken a timely subject, Evolution vs Intelligent Design, and given us totally refreshing young characters struggling with this debate as they also suffer the pains of growing up and first love.
The wonderful writing, engaging characters and dialogue that just pops off the page, makes what could have been a "preachy" book, and turns it into a work of art. We are drawn into the quest for knowledge along with Jeremy and Maria, our two charming main characters. The author gives us a wealth of knowledge and references in this on-going debate, but presents it in a unique manner - within an entertaining story. I recommend this novel to anyone seeking not only intelligent presentation of these two theories, but a captivating story as well. You won't be disappointed!

All the Voicesof the Wind,

This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
All the Voices of the Wind is much more than a simple tale of a teenage boy (Jeremy) who meets the girl of his dreams (Maria). It is about the growth of the soul and the enrichment of the mind. Donald Parker has taken the everyday events a teen faces and woven them into poignant tale of a young man's journey in search of answers about the theory of evolution. The road he travels is bumpy and loaded with self doubt. Hostility and pain follow him along his path that has unexpected turns and twists. It is a great read that I highly recommend.

This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
The first of Mr. Parker's novels introduces the reader to two teenagers caught in the maelstrom of secular America's attempt to debunk Christianity. The author utilizes warmth, humor, and intelligence to illustrate a cogent stand made by his protagonists to ascertain the validity of each prevailing school of thought: Darwinism and Intelligent Design.
Don Parker's characters draw the reader in: Maria Masterson - Christian; daughter; scholar; athlete; and seeker: Jeremy Dillon - son; athlete; reader; and seeker ( with a witty, surprisingly endearing, approach to communication ). Advisement: Maria and Jeremy will earn a place in your heart. Don invites us into their world of inner turmoil, de rigueur temptations, and a search for enlightenment. Accompanying Jeremy and Maria, we find they pose our questions: What is truth? Where do I find it? How will I know? I recommend this novel to teens and their parents. Its a fun, reference rich, ride on a tilt-a-whirl quest for knowledge.

Novel Approach to Timeless Debate,

This review is from: All the Voices of the Wind (Paperback)
Creation. Evolution. Intelligent Design. Charles Darwin. Here's a refreshing approach to all the scientific, philosophical, and religious arguments filling multiple volumes in today's culture. Donald Parker does a fantastic job weaving character, dialogue, and story into this ageless debate. If you're looking for an entertaining novel that never falls short on credible science and compelling evidence, this is the one! Great summer read!

This book is a valuable resource and an inspirational guide which provides an in-depth account of a young man's spiritual quest. The author's use of crisp, clear dialogue, extensive research, and a fascinating story line serves to enlighten the reader regarding Darwins Theory of Evolution vs. Intelligent Design. Not only do I recommend this read to individuals seeking a refreshing look at the subject, I feel this book would be a marvelous addition to Christian libraries.

A teenaged girl sets out to prove creation to her science teacher and gets several friends on board. The protag is a young male - the quarterback of the football team, who happens to fall for the cute `new' girl. Although not a Christian himself, he soon finds himself going to church in order to impress his love interest. This is complicated by the fact that his father is dead set against anything to do with religion.
Sometimes the dialogue, especially among the teens themselves, just doesn't come across as authentic. As well, there were times when it seemed the story was not moving forward because of too much extraneous information. However, the actual evidence for creation that comes out in the book is very interesting and thoroughly researched. If this is a topic that you are interested in, push through until you get what you came for.

All The Voices of the Wind
By Donald James Parker Review by David J. White All the Voices of the Wind is a delightfully believable and realistic love story from beginning to end. It follows the life of highschool student Jeremy Dillon as he begins a promising senior year. Jeremy's life is predictably derailed when fate places the beautiful Maria Masterson near him on his first day in school. But Maria is not your average distraction. Instead she's interesting, intelligent, and for Jeremy, utterly captivating, and he needs to know everything about her. The more he knows, however , the more he has to fear; but love overcomes fear, doubt and in Jeremy's case temperance. What's so dreadful about this girl? Well, firstly, she's a Christian, but most condemning, she's a doubter of evolution. For most, these eccentricities wouldn't necessarily be enough do deter a determined suitor, but Jeremy's father is an atheist, Biology Professor, and most of all the closest person in the world to Jeremy. With the force Maria exerts over him Jeremy is pulled further and further away from the world of his father, and his ideas. But Jeremy is convinced more and more that Evolution is bad science and becomes one of the leaders of the movement within his highschool, not to ban Evolution's teaching, but to let students know it's also not necessarily complete fact. Neither Jeremy nor Maria expected the backlash that they would receive because of their effort. At the same time, Jeremy becomes completely unreasonable and unruly when dealing with his father (whose response isn't any better), and a relationship most would describe as perfect quickly becomes dysfunctional at best. What makes this a good and lifelike story is the fact that Jeremy realizes what trying to have a relationship with Maria will likely cost him, and all but comes to a decision that it simply isn't worth the price. But love, or God, won't let the relationship die, and even though they never officially date, their love abounds. Mr. Parker will tell you that this book was written to bring attention to the anti-evolution movement, showing it in such a way that it is more than just tired arguments and slogans. The love story is just the sugar that helps the medicine go down. The fact is, though, that the love story makes readers care about the characters, and instead of trying to put the anti-evolution advocates in the best light, he also treats them realistically. They are highschool students after all, and their behavior and oftentimes arguments (that is, those in support of the anti-evolution movement) is very immature. The zeal and idealism is indicative of youth, as is the lack of indoctrination. If there is any flaw in the presentation of anti-evolution arguments it is the fact that none of its advocates started with any real knowledge of evolution or of Darwin's original work. But this is not a flaw of the book itself, since most people who oppose evolution do so based on the arguments of the anti-evolutionists rather than on their own understanding of evolution itself. In fact, one of the points of this book is to draw attention to the fact that very few folks have much knowledge of what evolution is really about. Oddly, even this apparent biased presentation gives credibility to the book, and, of course, some of their arguments are convincing in themselves. The only problem with All the Voices of the Wind come from the fact that it was self published and has a few of the problems that plague self published books. Although the storytelling is very good, the editing is far from perfect with missing quotation marks (among some other problems) abounding. Fortunately, these errors seem to occur in the same way, and Mr. Parker's style makes it easy to tell when what you're reading is dialog and when it's not. The book is, however, priced reasonably for a self published book at $12.95, so pick it up today if you like love stories and are interested in the debate over evolution. |
