Leatherface takes the gold,
By A Customer
This review is from: Vol. 1-Byo Split Series (Audio CD)
I had been told about Leatherface only a couple of years ago by a friend of mine, and have since become a huge fan. I was ecstatic when this split came out. Leatherface's music is all its own, with some fairly intricate guitar work for a "punk" band. Frankie Stubbs sings with heart, and his gruff pipes (you'll get used to them) are the perfect instrument with which to portray all of the emotion. The second half of this CD, by Hot Water Music, is okay. I usually stop this CD after the 6 Leatherface tracks.

this is a great record - for at least the first couple tracks. although im somewhat a fan of hot water music, they didnt quite do it for me on this album. not in the least. if youre feeling up for a challenge, try checking out some of frankie stubbs solo stuff. there arent even words to explain the greatness.

ok. i had seen hot water music before and loved them... so, i got this cd, cos i really liked leatherface too, and their stuff was so hard to find (i didn't think they were even together anymore)...and i was excited that they were doing a split with HWM. this album made me "hot-water-music-uber-fan". one of my all time favorite hwm songs "the bitter end" is up here, and really, it's the best hwm song on this release.now to leatherface. holy [...]...leatherface is SOO very very GOOD. some people may find frankie's vocals a bit difficult to take, but listen to it enough, you will get used to it! leatherface is like a grown up version of hot water music who play beautiful music so effortlessly, you can't believe how much heart and emotion are in these songs! they are fantastic. the leatherface half of this album is a bit better than the hwm part... "andy", "wax lyrical" are some of my favorite leatherface songs. but while the hwm songs up here might not be the best they have done, it's still a damn fine record all around. buy it. there is no way fans of either band would be let down.

Leatherface& Hot water music, Remi's review,

I was only listening to H.W.M. and had barely heard of leatherface when this split came available to me. I was really happy to get some new H.W.M material, and at that time, at wasn't interested into listening to some new relase of a band I did'nt know. The H.W.M side is pretty good, not at their top, but there are a couple of songs that fit their average exelent quality. Then I read the back of the LP jacket, and it made me extremely axious to hear the Leatherface part. It basically read that H.W.M was very much influenced by the old Leatherface, and foud that out by myself the minute I turned it on. Their like H.W.M without trying as hard. It seems that the music is flowing from them and their energy is coming out even stronger and better. I actually found myself loosing respect for H.W.M because it now is obvious to me where they got their inspiration and style. Leatherface is just plain good!

The best split record around,

I tend to think that bands reserve their better songs for full-length albums, but in this case that is not true at all, especially with Leatherface. How could I have missed out on such a great band before? I can only agree with the reviewer from New York: the balance between rawness and heart-felt emotions is perfect. Finally, to do Hot Water Music justice, I think that "The Bitter End" may be the best song they ever recorded. I wish BYO records would get rich with this wonderful EP.

this is a fantastic album by two bands who've really got it together. the record shows the more mature sides of both bands, sounding different than fuel for the hate game or cherry knowle, but equally badass. hwm and leatherface's passion for music consistantly blow me away.

Five stars for Leatherface. No stars for Tepid Water Music. How does that average out to five stars? Simple, because you don't actually have to listen to Hot Water Music's direly atrocious snivelling. Just play the first few tracks and this is a great record.

I wouldn't really knock HWM. They're stuff is perfectly alright, but fails to reach me...Leatherface on the other hand. I had been a fan for a while, despondent that I only got into them after their demise. Imagine my elation that there were 6 new Leatherface tracks out there. I can't say all of them are peak, but "Andy," the first track, is worth the price of the CD alone. I haven't heard a song that beautiful since Swervedriver's "Son of Mustang Ford." It's amazing how a song that's so intricate can present itself so simply. It almost makes me teary. "Eat Her Face" never fails to excite me, and the last two tracks bring it home for me, only to skip back to track one, so as not to be disappointed in the HWM tracks. Glad Frankie NW Stubbs is still at it.
