Editorial Reviews

2009 four CD release, the first in a series of box sets spotlighting key moments in the evolution of Dub. This set focuses on the roots of Dub bringing together many of the main players from Dub's big bang moments. Joe Gibbs' Serial Dub from 1973 is one of the true foundation stones of Dub, recorded at Randy's with Errol Thompson at the controls. Two crucial Dub box sets from King Tubby are included: Dub From The Roots (1974) and The Roots Of Dub (1975), produced by Bunny Lee. The final disc is Sir Coxsone's King Of The Dub Rock recorded and mixed at King Tubby's, well remembered by all original dub heads. Greensleeves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice set, September 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vol. 1-Evolution of Dub-Origin of the Species (Audio CD)
A 4 CD set, quite nicely packaged with interesting notes, of early Jamacian dub. I don't think this material--which are 4 dub albums by the great King Tubby--are available elsewhere on CD. The price is not unreasonable--about 8 dollars per CD--but I would advise novices to purchase another dub album first--perhaps King Tubby meets the Rockers Uptown or King Tubby meets the Roots Radics. If you already are familiar with dub--and naturally love it--you should buy these CDs, for this is extremely good dub in the very nice package.

Dub by the way is reggae music radically remixed in the studio with echo effects and instuments dropping in and out. The vocal track is usually deleted completely, and the song is completely transformed. Amusingly, the notes quote the great Jamacian producer Niney the Observer as saying that he could not recognize his songs when King Tubby delivered his dub versions.

In my opinion it is better to buy the CDs than download the material. Not only is the lavish package very nice, but I feel dub does not transfer well to the MP3 format.
